Dead Rising movie recruits Leprechaun: Origins director

Back in June 2014, it was reported that the blockbuster game series Dead Rising would be adapted for a feature-length, live-action film that would debut on Crackle before receiving an on-demand video release. Things seem to be moving along quickly for the project, as it now has a director attached.

Leprechaun: Origins director Zach Lipovsky will get behind the camera for the Dead Rising movie, The Wrap reports. The film will be the first project to come out of Legendary Digital Media, the recently created digital content studio for Legendary Pictures.

While details on the film’s plot are scarce, the Capcom series that inspired it followed various characters as they attempted to survive — and investigate the truth behind — a zombie outbreak with mysterious connections to the government. The original 2006 game spawned two sequels, one spin-off, and several DLC adventures that served to expand the story beyond the various main characters.

Lipovsky first garnered attention as a contestant on the reality series On the Lot, which featured 16 filmmakers competing for a development deal with DreamWorks. He made his directorial debut with Leprechaun: Origins, which will receive a limited theatrical release this weekend ahead of its on-demand release August 26.

While there’s no release date set for Dead Rising at this point, the 90-minute film will debut exclusively on Crackle before hitting the on-demand market.

Blood, gore, and demons return in Evil Dead Rise trailer

The next chapter in the Evil Dead franchise takes the action from the woods to the city in Evil Dead Rise. The first trailer is bloody, gory, and full of Deadites. In other words, it's an Evil Dead movie.

Beth (I Met a Girl's Lily Sullivan) travels to Los Angeles to visit her older sister, Elie (Vikings's Alyssa Sutherland), and her three children. Elie struggles to raise the children as a single mother in their cramped L.A. apartment, so Beth's visit is much appreciated. However, the reunion is cut short when they find the Necronomicon, a book from previous Evil Dead films, in Ellie's building. The evil book unleashes the Deadites, flesh-possessing demons that wreak havoc and bring the horrors of hell to earth. As Elie becomes possessed, Beth becomes a defacto mother as she protects the children while battling the Deadites in all their bloody glory.

At the 94th Academy Awards, Dune, Denis Villeneuve's ambitious adaptation of Frank Herbert's challenging sci-fi masterpiece, won six Oscars, the most out of any film in the ceremony. Since its premiere last October, Dune has received near-universal acclaim from critics and audiences, who praised it as one of the best sci-fi epics of the new millennium, up there with Goerge Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road and Christopher Nolan's Inception.

Villeneuve is no stranger to daring, thought-provoking, critically acclaimed films. 2016 saw the release of Arrival, one of the most challenging, philosophical, and beautiful sci-fi pieces in recent memory. The following year, Blade Runner 2049, his neo-noir follow-up to the 1982 classic Blade Runner, opened to universal critical praise but commercial disappointment, grossing only $259 million against a production budget of between $150 and $185 million. While a narratively accomplished and technically proficient director, many questioned Villeneuve's commercial viability; however, Dune grossed $400 million worldwide despite a day-and-date release in HBO Max and an ongoing pandemic. Mixing commercial and critical success, Dune finally put to rest any questions about Villeneuve's standing as one of the greatest directors in the business.
