'Deadpool' and 'Stranger Things' nab Golden Globe Award nominations

The nominations for the 74th Annual Golden Globe Awards have been announced, and as is often the case with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s award show, the list of nominees is an eclectic mix of projects and performers that span a wide range of what the movie and television industries offered up over the last 12 months.

The nominations were announced Monday, December 12, by actors Don Cheadle, Laura Dern, and Anna Kendrick, and the list of nominees includes some surprising films and actors who aren’t likely to get as much attention from the Golden Globes’ more prestigious (or possibly elitist, depending on who you ask) counterpart, The Academy Awards, but are deserving of recognition all the same.

Chief among those unlikely honorees was the “R”-rated superhero comedy Deadpool, which earned not one, but two nominations.

Unlike the Academy Awards, the Golden Globe Awards honor both film and television projects,  and their casts and creative teams. The Golden Globes also differentiate based on genre, with nominations divided between drama and “musical or comedy” categories. The winners of each category are determined by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

This year’s ceremony will be hosted by Jimmy Fallon, and it will also honor eight-time Golden Globe winner Meryl Streep with the 2017 Cecil B. DeMille Award.

The 74th Annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony will air live on NBC from 8-11 p.m. ET on January 8, 2017.

Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick.

As the halfway point of 2025 approaches, it's become clear that the 2020s have been a great decade for action movies. The genre is very popular among the various streamers, but it's also still the top draw at the box office. Almost all of the major hits from the last half decade have incorporated action into the story in some way. It's just what people want to see on the big screen.

It was surprisingly easy to pick the No. 1 film on our list of the seven best action movies of the 2020s. But there may soon be another contender for the throne. And if the second half of the decade produces action flicks that are as good as the movies of the last five years, then this list will look very different in 2029.

Director Joseph Kosinski set out to make the most authentic racing movie ever made with F1. Judging by the new footage with Brad Pitt behind the wheel, Kosinski might have achieved his goal.
