What’s new on Netflix and what’s leaving in April 2024

In a way, Netflix is a victim of its own success. In addition to successfully launching 3 Body Problem and The Gentlemen in March, Netflix also had a hit with Damsel, a fantasy film starring Stranger Things‘ Millie Bobby Brown. But because Netflix is the No. 1 streamer and wants to stay on top, it can’t rest on its laurels in April.

That’s one of the reasons why Netflix is kicking off April with Ripley, which features Sherlock‘s Andrew Scott as Tom Ripley, the antihero from the 1999 thriller The Talented Mr. Ripley. Among the other originals coming this month are an animated update of the ’70s sitcom Good Times, DC’s Dead Boy Detectives, and Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver.

It's not often that Netflix gets to add a pirate drama to its lineup of shows, simply because there aren't many live-action pirate series to begin with. But since Starz already spent the money to produce Black Sails a decade ago, Netflix gets to reap the benefits by adding it. Similarly, BBC America's spy thriller Killing Eve is also joining Netflix this month. Both shows had multiseason runs, which make them perfect for bingeing.

Our third addition to the lineup in April is One Day, a romantic drama that chronicles a relationship through its beginning and all the way to the end. One Day also has a lot of episodes compared to other Netflix originals, and you'll want to keep some tissues handy because it's a tearjerker. If you have to watch one Netflix show this April, stream this one

The best thing about Netflix is that there's almost never a shortage of new things to watch. In the first half of April, we've already seen the premiere of prominent original series including Ripley, Parasyte: The Grey, and Good Times, as well as the arrival of Sex and the City on loan from HBO and Max. But if you have to watch only one Netflix show this April, then the one you can't miss is Black Sails.

In 2014, Starz launched Black Sails as an original series in the vein of Spartacus, as well as the short-lived Camelot. This was also a post-Game of Thrones TV landscape, and Starz wanted to make a splash of its own. Since HBO had a such death grip on the fantasy genre, Starz went ahead with a show that's both a historical epic and also a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson's classic adventure novel Treasure Island. Even if you've never read Stevenson's book, almost everyone has heard of its most iconic character, Long John Silver. And while hedoes play a large role in Black Sails, the primary focus is on a lesser-known character from Treasure Island: Captain James Flint.
