It features an impressive cast

Land of Bad Trailer #1 (2024)

While it adheres to many of the convention of the survival thriller genre, Land of Bad is elevated in large part by a deep and well-assembled cast. Russell Crowe and Liam Hemsworth are the movie’s two lead characters, and Crowe ably lends his gravitas to the part even though he’s largely confined to a single room.

The two of them are accompanied by actors like Milo Ventimiglia and Chika Ikogwe, who help to ground the material in what at least feels sort of like the real world, which is no small feat considering the movie’s premise.

It knows what kind of movie it is

In an era when more and more movies feel embarrassed to “just” be an action or horror movie, Land of Bad steers hard the other way. This is a meaty, machismo-driven action movie designed explicitly to be exactly that.

It doesn’t have the lofty ambitions of some recent horror movies, and its main goal seems to be that audiences walk out of the theater (or get off the couch) feeling satisfied. It may have a few things to say about the plight of the modern soldier, but it never lets those points get in the way of a solidly built pace.

It features several smartly assembled set pieces

As any movie of its kind should, Land of Bad is built around several smartly constructed set pieces that, importantly, never feel like they are repetitive. It’s a movie that organically builds toward its climax, and one where the final action beats are just as compelling as what’s come before them.

There’s definitely plenty of gunplay at the heart of Land of Bad, but it’s also a movie that features set pieces with distinct objectives and goals, and that helps to make the fights themselves feel less monotonous and one note.

It has a genuine feel-good energy

While it certainly leans heavily on machismo, you can’t help but walk away from Land of Bad with a sense of admiration for the men and women who risk their lives for their country and one another every day.

There’s a certain reverence at the heart of the film for America’s soldiers, and while that might veer into a more explicit political statement in the wrong hands, here it feels like something more wholehearted and sincere. These people are working together to save one another, and regardless of why they’re there, that’s something Land of Bad feels we should all admire.

Everything leaving Netflix in March 2025
Nicholas Hoult and Tom Hardy in Mad Max: Fury Road.

There are certain months where Netflix skates by without losing anything important. March is not going to be one of those months, as the streamer is set to lose two of its biggest films on loan from Max -- Mad Max: Fury Road and Godzilla vs. Kong. We'll miss those titles, but at least we know where they'll be going after their Netflix stint ends.
Happy! -- a very underrated comic book adaptation about a man, Nick Sax (Christopher Meloni), who can see his daughter's imaginary friend (as voiced by Patton Oswalt) -- is also on the way out of Netflix in March. Other notable departures include the Liam Neeson action flick A Walk Among the Tombstones and A24's coming-of-age drama Aftersun. So, catch those while you still can.

The 50 best shows on Netflix in March 2025
The cast of Adolescence.

This week's top addition to the best new shows on Netflix is Adolescence, and it's a real downer. This British crime drama revolves around a young boy who is accused of a brutal murder, but Netflix subscribers have already made it No. 1 on the most popular shows on Netflix. It's just the kind of dark story that resonates with true crime lovers, even though it's fictional.
The other key addition this week is The Leopard, an Italian period drama that hasn't broken through to the mainstream of Netflix's programing yet. But we wouldn't bet against it, given the relative lack of other new options at the moment. You can find these series and more among the best shows on Netflix. We update this list every Friday to give you the best streaming options for your weekend viewing.
We’ve also rounded up all the best new shows to stream this week, the best movies on Netflix, the best shows on Hulu, the best shows on Amazon Prime, and the best shows on Disney+ because we take our streaming seriously. New this week
Adolescence

Each episode of Adolescence was filmed in one continuous take, and the show rarely lets the audience have a breather. In the opening minutes alone, DI Luke Bascombe (Ashley Walters) and DS Misha Frank (Faye Marsay) burst into a home alongside a SWAT team to arrest 13-year-old boy, Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper), for the murder of his classmate, Katie (Emilia Holliday).
