Sherlock Holmes meets Moriarty and wears a dress (not at the same time) in this new A Game of Shadows trailer

While maybe it would be more in keeping with the subject material to have this article be one piece of a complex puzzle that when assembled led to the first trailer for the upcoming Sherlock Holmes sequel, that would be silly. So instead you can just watch it below.

The movie highlights one of the greatest rivalries in popular fiction: the brilliant detective Holmes verses the criminal mastermind Moriarty. In a time before superheroes, Holmes and Moriarty’s battles were as close to Batman versus the Joker as the Victorians got.

When the Crown Prince of Austria is found dead, the hapless Inspector Lestrade rules it a suicide. Holmes soon realizes that the death is actually a murder, and is part of a much larger plot hatched by Moriarty (Jared Harris) that could change the course of the world. When Sherlock (Downey Jr.) and his brother Mycroft (Stephen Fry) join Dr. Watson (Jude Law) at a gentlemen’s club to celebrate his last night as a bachelor, Holmes encounters Sim (Noomi Rapace), a Gypsy fortune teller, who is the next target of the Prince’s killer. Reluctantly she agrees to come with Holmes and Watson, and the trio investigate the case across England, France, Germany, and Switzerland.

But for those that can’t get enough Holmes, and curse the nature of time that will hold back the release of this movie for several months still, the BBC TV series has you covered. The BAFTA-winning version of the detective, simply titled Sherlock–a modern day look at the detective from showrunner Steven Moffat, starring The Hobbit’s Martin Freeman and the impressively named Benedict Cumberbatch–will return for its second season sometime this Fall.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows hits theaters on December 16.
