Black Mirror’s David Ajala joins cast of Star Trek: Discovery for season 3

After the dramatic ending to season 2, Trek fans are on tenterhooks to learn what will become of the Discovery crew in season 3. And now there’s a whole batch of new information that’s been shared at San Diego Comic-Con.

The big announcement from the SDCC panel is a new cast member who will be joining next season: David Ajala. The British actor is known for his role in the (delightful, and criminally underrated) sci-fi fantasy Jupiter Ascending, as well as a turn in the action flick Fast & Furious 6. And British TV viewers will recognize him from parts on shows like Doctor Who, Black Mirror, and Misfits.

Ajala will be playing a new character named Cleveland Booker (a.k.a. “Book”), possessed of a “natural charm and reckless attitude” but there’s no word yet on whether he’s an Enterprise ally or enemy, so you’ll have to tune into season 3 to learn more. In the first episode we’ll also learn who the captain of the Enterprise will be.

It’s been revealed that the series will take place 1000 years in the future, so who knows what surprises will await Michael and the others. Season 3 won’t stray too far from the spirit of Trek though. Executive producer Alex Kurtzman promised that the season would honor the canon and not erase previously established Trek history, saying that the show will continue to be “Star Trek the way Roddenberry wanted it.”

As well as the season 3 news, there are also updates on Short Treks, the short films set in the Star Trek universe which are distributed online. Six new shorts will be released, including ones featuring Spock and Captain Pike. And there will be tribbles! Everyone’s favorite fur balls will be making an appearance.

One short will be garnering particular attention: A Picard story, staring the one and only Patrick Stewart, which will serve as an introduction and a teaser for the Picard spin-off show.

For the first time in 20 years, Whoopi Goldberg is back in the Star Trek universe. In the new trailer for Star Trek: Picard season 2, Patrick Stewart's Jean-Luc Picard faces a time-bending problem. But there's no one better-suited to give him advice than his old friend, Guinan (Goldberg). And while the future of humanity and the Federation may be at stake, Guinan tells Picard that the "answers are not in the stars. And they never have been."

The trailer also seems to indicate that John de Lancie's Q was not responsible for the incident that put Picard and his crew into a new timeline. However, Q is definitely taking advantage of the chaos to put Picard through another test. The nearly omnipotent being hasn't appeared to Picard since the final episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. And Q always relishes his mind games, because the trial of humanity never ends.

Star Trek boldly goes into 2022 with renewals, premiere dates

Paramount+ is more than just the streaming home for every new Star Trek series. However, there's a lot of Star Trek on the horizon for fans to enjoy, and Paramount+ isn't wasting any time lining up even more for years to come. The streaming service has formally renewed Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and Star Trek: Lower Decks for new seasons.

The flagship series, Star Trek: Discovery, is currently on a midseason hiatus. The fourth season of Discovery will resume on Thursday, February 10. With the renewal in hand, Discovery's fifth season will likely begin filming later this year.

Star Trek Day ’21 celebrates 55 years of Kirk and beyond with livestreamed event

On September 8, 1966, The Man Trap -- the first broadcast episode of Star Trek: The Original Series -- aired on NBC starring William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, and other faces that would soon become familiar to millions of fans as the iconic crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise. To celebrate the 55th anniversary, Paramount+ has just announced details for the Second Annual Star Trek Day, which will pay tribute to not only that milestone, but all that's come since -- and everything that's on its way.

Per a Paramount+ press release, Star Trek Day will be a free livestreamed event held at 5:30 p.m. PT on Wednesday, September 8, and broadcast from the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. Star Trek Day will be hosted by Star Trek: The Next Generation alum Wil Wheaton and actress Mica Burton (Critical Role), daughter of Wheaton's co-star LeVar Burton. The event will include music from a live orchestra helmed by Jeff Russo, who composed the themes for both Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard.
