Star Wars: The Force Awakens character names revealed in retro trading cards

We received our first look at some of the new characters being introduced into the Star Wars universe via the Star Wars: The Force Awakens teaser trailer, but now we finally know their names. And their identities have been revealed in the most nostalgia-inducing way.

Co-writer and director J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy officially revealed the names of the characters via a set of images that frame various scenes from the teaser footage as classic Topps trading cards. Among other elements from the teaser, the “cards” feature the characters played by Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaacs, John Boyega, and even that mysterious figure wielding a triple-bladed lightsaber and the “ball droid” that have prompted so much discussion.

Here’s what the cards tell us about the characters:

  1. The “ball droid” character is named BB-8.
  2. Isaacs’ character, who’s seen piloting an X-Wing (pictured above), is named Poe Dameron.
  3. The cloaked-and-hooded character seen wielding the sparking lightsaber with three blades is named Kylo Ren.
  4. Daisy Ridley’s character, who’s seen riding some kind landspeeder/speeder bike hybrid across a desert, is named Rey.
  5. The character played by John Boyega, who’s seen wearing a Stormtrooper uniform, is named Finn.

There are three more “cards” in the set of images identifying the Stormtroopers, X-Wings, and Millennium Falcon, but anyone familiar with the Star Wars universe is probably well aware of each of those elements already.

Given that next week will put us exactly one year away from the film’s premiere, it’s reasonable to expect the occasion might be marked by another announcement or additional news of some sort — but another set of trading-card images could certainly be in the mix (and welcomed), too.

It’s also worth noting that we still haven’t officially seen the characters played by Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Adam Driver, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, or any of the other new additions to the Star Wars universe — though one of them could be the mysterious cloaked character. We also have yet to see returning cast members Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, or any of the costumed actors reprising their roles from the original trilogy.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters December 18, 2015. The trading card for Kylo Ren is posted below, and the rest can be seen at EW.

Star Wars veterans Daisy Ridley & Alden Ehrenreich are making a rom-com together
Daisy Ridley in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and Alden Ehrenreich in Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Daisy Ridley and Alden Ehrenreich were two of the biggest additions to the Star Wars franchise in the Lucasfilm's Disney era. Ridley played Rey across the three films of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, while Ehrenreich headlined Solo: A Star Wars Story as a young Han Solo. Ridley's Rey only met Harrison Ford's Han Solo on-screen, but now she and Ehrenreich will be sharing a lot of screentime together in a new rom-com.

As reported by Deadline, Ridley and Ehrenreich are set to star in director Donald Petrie's The Last Resort, a romantic comedy that is set in the Philippines. Petrie is best known for two of his previous rom-coms, Miss Congeniality and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. His most recent film, Little Italy -- which was also a rom-com -- featured Star Wars prequel actor Hayden Christensen in a leading role.

New Andor season 2 video teases monumental Star Wars event
A group of Star Wars characters stare on the poster in Andor.

The road to rebellion intensifies in Andor season 2.
Disney released a special look at Andor season 2, which features behind-the-scenes access to the upcoming episodes and interviews with the cast and crew. However, the most noteworthy moment occurs when the video cuts to Ghorman and spotlights a crowd of protestors chanting in unison against Imperial forces.

In Star Wars canon, Ghorman is the site of the Ghorman Massacre. In 2 BBY, Imperial forces open fire and slaughter a group of peaceful protestors on Ghorman. The harrowing events cause Senator Mon Mothma of Chandrila to resign from the Senate and condemn Emperor Sheev Palpatine. Mothma's resignation and subsequent speech serve as a rallying cry for freedom and a launching point for the Rebel Alliance.

Star Wars’ Kathleen Kennedy on retirement, Shawn Levy’s movie, & Simon Kinberg’s trilogy
Rey Finn Poe Chewie and C-3PO in the desert in "Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker."

Kathleen Kennedy is setting the record straight about her alleged retirement from Star Wars and Lucasfilm.
Earlier this week, it was reported that Kennedy informed her associates of her plans to retire from Lucasfilm by the end of 2025. Days later, Kennedy spoke with Deadline to shoot down those retirement rumors and clarify her future plans.

"The truth is, and I want to just say loud and clear, I am not retiring," Kennedy said. "I will never retire from movies. I will die making movies. That is the first thing that’s important to say. I am not retiring. What’s happening at Lucasfilm is I have been talking for quite some time with both Bob and Alan about what eventual succession might look like."
