The upcoming DC Comics supervillain team-up movie Suicide Squad is shaping up to be a dark affair, reportedly providing on-set therapists for its cast and in a recent update from the set, having the cast tattoo the director and one of their co-stars.

Photos of the inking were posted to Instagram by Suicide Squad writer/director David Ayer and actor Joel Kinnaman (RoboCop), who plays Rick Flagg in the film. The pair were the recipients of matching “SKWAD” tattoos inked by cast members Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) and Will Smith (The Pursuit of Happyness).

“Got my #skwad tattoo:) Will has many many talents, tattooing is not one of them.” wrote Kinnaman in the caption for his photo. “It was like watching a drunk baby fly a helicopter. #suicidesquad #willsmith #harleystattooparlour”

As for Ayer, he kept things simple with a shot (posted to Twitter) of Robbie hard at work on his tattoo, captioned “#skwad.” He also posted an image of the sign for the fictional shop where the tattoos were created, “Harley’s Tattoo Parlour” — indicating that Robbie’s Harley Quinn character may have settled into an occupation that keeps her on the right side of the law (and superheroes, for that matter).

Written and directed by Ayer, Suicide Squad brings together a long list of villains from the DC Comics universe for a gritty, live-action adventure in which they’re forced to cooperate on a dangerous mission being conducted by a secret government agency. Smith plays the assassin Deadshot, while Robbie plays Joker’s popular paramour, Harley Quinn.

The cast of Suicide Squad is filled out by Jai Courtney (Spartacus) as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne (Anna Karenina) as Enchantress, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Lost) as Killer Croc, Jay Hernandez (Hostel) as El Diablo, Adam Beach (Flags of Our Fathers) as Slipknot, Viola Davis (The Help) as Amanda Waller, and Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club) as the Joker. Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood, Raymond Olubowale, Alex Meraz, Jim Parrack, and Common are also rumored for unspecified roles.

The first iteration of Suicide Squad debuted all the way back in 1959, and the roster of the team has gone through a wide range of permutations over the years, with some members dying off — as the title of the series suggests — and being replaced by other villains.

Suicide Squad is currently filming, and is expected to hit theaters August 5, 2016.

2025 is a make-or-break year for superhero movies
David Corenswet lies in the snow in Superman.

After the first trailer for James Gunn's Superman premiered in late 2024, the filmmaker offered some insight into the movie's beaten, bloodied take on the Last Son of Krypton. "We do have a battered Superman in the beginning. That is our country," Gunn told journalists at a special Q&A preview event. Few would disagree with his analogy for the current state of America. One could also argue, though, that the Man of Steel's broken state in the Superman trailer is also reflective of the superhero genre's status heading into 2025.

Warner Bros. Pictures pointedly didn't release any new DC films in 2024, having brought its troubled DC Extended Universe to an end in 2023 with The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Marvel, meanwhile, tried to recover from multiple difficult, consecutive years of critical and financial disappointments by lowering its output in 2024. The studio released just one film, Deadpool & Wolverine, and only two new shows, Echo and Agatha All Along. Deadpool & Wolverine was a massive box office success, and Agatha All Along ranks as one of Marvel's most warmly reviewed projects in years. No one would go so far as to say that either title truly revived the Marvel Cinematic Universe or turned its luck around, though.

Matt Murdock confronts Wilson Fisk in Daredevil: Born Again trailer

Matt Murdock is ready for the MCU spotlight in the first trailer for the Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again.

"Well, I will admit. It's not entirely unpleasant seeing you again," Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin, says to Charlie Cox's Murdock in a scene that mirrors the diner confrontation in Heat. Fisk is running for mayor of New York City, while Murdock, who is blind, prefers fighting crime as lawyer in the courts instead of being the vigilante Daredevil. However, Murdock is back to wearing Daredevil's signature suit by the end of the trailer and delivering punishment via the fist.

This 2025 show on Max may be the future of streaming TV
Noah Wyle stands alone on a rooftop in The Pitt.

The Pitt is an intentional throwback. The new medical drama, which premiered on Max last week, is created by ER veteran R. Scott Gemmill, executive produced by former ER showrunner John Wells, and led by actor Noah Wyle, who became a household name playing John Carter on — you guessed it — ER. The series is such an obvious attempt at replicating the success of ER, which debuted on NBC in 1994 and ran until 2009, that the estate of ER creator Michael Crichton is suing Wells, Wyle, Gemmill, and Warner Bros. Television for unofficially rebooting ER without paying the estate or giving Crichton the creator credit such an act would demand.
