‘The Accountant’ trailer puts guns and money in Ben Affleck’s hands

The certainty of nothing except death and taxes is a frequently referenced adage, and in the upcoming film The Accountant, Ben Affleck embodies a character that spends much of his time dealing with — and apparently dishing out — both elements. And thanks to Warner Bros. Pictures, we now have another look at the October movie.

The new trailer puts Affleck front and center as a brilliant mathematician who has translated his talent into a job managing the assets of some of the world’s most dangerous criminals, only to find himself targeted when he gets caught up in a new client’s scheme — one that involves an accounting clerk played by Academy Award nominee Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect).

Directed by Warrior filmmaker Gavin O’Connor, The Accountant also stars Academy Award winner J.K. Simmons (Whiplash), Jon Bernthal (Daredevil), Cynthia Addai-Robinson (Arrow), Jeffrey Tambor (Arrested Development), and John Lithgow (3rd Rock from the Sun). Simmons plays the head of the Treasury Department’s Crime Enforcement Division, who makes Affleck’s accountant character the focus of a far-reaching investigation.

The script for The Accountant was penned by Bill Dubuque, who wrote the 2014 drama The Judge. It was one of the screenplays featured in the 2011 edition of “The Blacklist” — the annual list of the most popular screenplays that have yet to be turned into a movie.

The Accountant hits theaters October 14.

Air trailer shows Matt Damon and Ben Affleck courting Michael Jordan to Nike
Matt Damon and Viola Davis sit at a bench in Air.

Before becoming a global sensation, Michael Jordan was a promising young basketball player looking for a sneaker company to sign with upon entering the NBA in the early '80s. Nike's quest to sign Jordan to a shoe deal plays out in the first trailer for Air.

Matt Damon (The Last Duel) stars as Sonny Vaccaro, a shoe salesman at Nike. Before he became the iconic marketing executive and entrepreneur, Vaccaro was looking for his big break. Vaccaro sees Jordan as a potential superstar and begins to pursue him to sign with Nike. Vaccaro tells CEO Phil Knight (The Tender Bar's Ben Affleck) that Nike should build a shoe line around the young player, something uncommon for rookies, and call it "Air Jordan." The ensuing journey is played out in the trailer as Vaccaro travels to North Carolina to convince Jordan's parents (Black Adam's Viola Davis and The Woman King's Julius Tennon) to sign with Nike.

Clerks III trailer gets meta with director Kevin Smith’s life
The cast of Clerks III.

To paraphrase the original Clerks, Kevin Smith wasn't even supposed to be here! He was just some guy in New Jersey at a dead-end job, until he maxed out his credit cards and made Clerks in 1994. That geek-savvy indie hit paved the way for everything that Smith has done since, including numerous films in which he reprised his role as Silent Bob. But there's still room for at least one more story in the View Askewniverse, and it's coming later this year with Clerks III.

In the new trailer for Deep Water, Affleck portrays Vic Van Allen, with de Armas as his wife Melinda Van Allen. At one point, there really was love between the Van Allens.
