‘The Departed’ is getting rebooted as a TV series at Amazon

If a reboot was successful, why not reboot it again? The Departed, Martin Scorsese’s 2006 Oscar-winning film, is being adapted into a TV series at Amazon, reports Deadline. The film is a reboot itself, based on Infernal Affairs, a 2002 crime thriller directed by Andrew Lau and Alan Mak.

Like its predecessors, The Departed TV series will center on a police department trying to bring down a group of criminals by implanting a mole, only to have to contend with one in their midst as well. While Infernal Affairs was set in Hong Kong, The Departed film took place in Boston. The TV series will reportedly jump locations as well, this time to Chicago. There, the police department will be trying to bring down a cutthroat Latino gang while a double-crosser works against them.

The Departed was both critically and commercially successful, which wasn’t surprisingly considering its stellar cast; it starred the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, and Mark Wahlberg. Needless to say, the TV series will have a lot to live up to. The project looks promising, though, and Amazon landed it in what was reportedly a “competitive situation.”

Producers and executive producers from the film are onboard, including Graham King and Roy Lee, both of whom will executive produce alongside Jason Richman, Michael Connolly, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Sarah Esberg, Tripp Vinson, Doug Davison, and Gianni Nunnari. Meanwhile, the series is being produced by the production companies behind the movie as well, Vertigo Entertainment, Initial Entertainment Group, and Plan B, plus Amazon Studios, in association with Warner Bros. TV. Richman, the creator of the police procedural drama Detroit 1-8-7, also serves as writer.

No timeline for The Departed TV series’ release has been announced, but it will be interesting to see how the reboot turns out.

What’s new on Amazon Prime Video in April 2024

April has arrived on Amazon Prime Video, and Fallout is about to begin. Prime Video's biggest addition this month is the series premiere of Fallout, which will adapt the post-apocalyptic world of the hit video games with a dark sense of humor.
