HBO to release a first look at Ridley Scott’s The Martian in advance of its Oct. 2 release

Ridley Scott’s The Martian has dropped promo spots, featurettes, and trailers galore in advance of its Oct. 2 release, but perhaps the most in-depth look at the upcoming film will hit HBO and HBO NOW this Monday, Sept. 28, at 9:45 p.m. Eastern time.

HBO First Look: The Martian will take audiences behind the scenes for an exclusive look at the making of the film, including exclusive interviews with Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, and Kate Mara, as well as gigantic fans creating artificial dust storms by blowing hurricane-force, 200 kph (124 mph) winds at the cast. Yikes!

It seems like this production went to great lengths to ensure that the experience felt authentic for audiences — which means that it needed to go to great lengths to make it feel authentic for the actors too.

A promo for the promo is embedded above, and Matt Damon reminds you as the video opens that “when things are really happening practically around you, it’s no acting required.” Jeff Daniels adds, “you follow your instincts, you react instead of act.” From the looks of things, director Ridley Scott kept the cast on its toes throughout filming and his use of practical effects looks like it could pay off big time.

This is sure to be a slow week for those who’ve been feverishly anticipating this film, but at least you’ll have this feature to look forward to. HBO’s First Look series typically runs for 15-20 minutes, so this should be a pretty meaty preview.

In case you missed it you can also check out the first teaser trailer, the first official trailer, and Neil deGrasse Tyson’s Cosmos promo covering the movie, here, here, and here.

Have no fear, however, you will get to see the actual movie eventually. The Martian hits theaters Oct. 2.

If you have to watch one Tubi movie this April, stream this one
A man leans over to talk to three guys in Hoosiers.

If you're looking for the streaming service with the best lineup of movies, Tubi would probably not be at the top of your list. Compared to Netflix or Max, Tubi's library isn't quite as impressive. But Tubi does have one big advantage over the larger streamers: It's free. There are ads, of course, but Tubi is also easier to navigate than similar FAST (Free Ad-supported Streaming Television) channels , plus it has some really good films.

This month, Tubi still has a selection of Warner Bros.' DC films, including The Batman, but the real attraction of this streaming service are the movies from the 1970s, '80s, and '90s that don't get a lot of attention in the streaming era. Without FAST Channels, it would be a lot harder to find our pick for the one Tubi movie that you should watch this April: Hoosiers.

7 best director’s cuts, ranked
Harrison Ford in Blade Runner.

For most movies, the only cut that we get the chance to see is the one that's released in theaters. Sometimes, a Blu-ray release will include some deleted scenes, but it's rare for those scenes to be reintegrated into the film. On some rare occasions, though, we get a chance to see what a director would have done with a movie if they had been granted final cut. Usually, these director's cuts come from some of the best directors ever to work in Hollywood, and they're sometimes even directorial debuts.

Sometimes, these director's cuts aren't that different from the theatrical versions, or it turns out that those cuts are actually worse than the ones we saw in theaters. Other times, though, we get cuts that are genuine improvements on the original film. We've compiled seven of the best director's cuts that ever saw the light of day for this list and ranked them below.
