‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ trailer takes the battle to a new level

The stakes keep getting higher in the rebooted, wildly successful Planet of the Apes franchise, and the first trailer for War for the Planet of the Apes suggests that the precarious balance between humans and apes could finally be approaching the tipping point.

20th Century Fox released the trailer for the July 2017 film Friday, offering the first glimpse at the third installment of the modern series. This time around, Caesar and the apes face an even more dire threat in the form of a ruthless soldier played by Woody Harrelson, who marshals the remaining human military to exterminate the apes.

War for the Planet of the Apes is directed by Matt Reeves, who also directed 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. The film’s official synopsis reads as follows:

In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.

As the synopsis mentions, the first two films in the rebooted franchise generated considerable critical praise to go along with nearly $1.2 billion in worldwide ticket sales, making it one of the most successful franchise reboots in recent years.

Along with Andy Serkis returning to provide the performance-capture acting as Caesar, the film also stars Steve Zahn, Terry Notary, Gabriel Chavarria, Judy Greer, and Karin Konoval.

War for the Planet of the Apes hits theaters July 14, 2017.

The Andor trailer and more news from Star Wars Celebration
Diego Luna in Andor.

Star Wars fans from around the world converged on the Anaheim Convention Center today in the hopes of getting exclusive news during the first day of Star Wars Celebration. And they were not disappointed. To kick off the very first panel of the day, Lucasfilm released the first trailer for its Rogue One prequel series, Andor.

Diego Luna will star in the series as Cassian Andor, the ruthless rebel operative who first appeared in Rogue One. Curiously, Cassian is barely in the trailer for the show that shares his name. But there's a real sense of paranoia and danger as the Empire expands. There are also fleeting glimpses of the show's supporting cast, including Genevieve O’Reilly, Stellan Skarsgård, Adria Arjona, Denise Gough, and Kyle Soller.

Idris Elba takes on a killer lion in new trailer for Beast
Idris Elba in Beast.

It looks like Jurassic World: Dominion won't be Universal Pictures' only summer film that features killer animals. In the first trailer for Beast, Idris Elba's Dr. Nate Daniels comes face-to-face with a murderous lion. And this big cat simply won't be placated, even though neither Nate nor his family have ever done anything to provoke it.

The trailer also introduces Sharlto Copley's Martin Battles, a good friend of the Daniels family. Nate took his teenage girls back to South Africa in an attempt to emotionally reconnect to them after their mother's death. Unfortunately, the Daniels family and Martin soon find themselves fighting for their lives. Not even hiding in a car can protect them from this bloodthirsty lion. But the king of the jungle has good reasons to hate all humans. Unfortunately, that means it's kill or be killed if Nate and his family hope to survive.

Obi-Wan Kenobi’s past and present collide in new trailer
Ewan McGregor in Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The original Star Wars led fans to believe that Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader's duel to the death was the first time that they had seen each other since Anakin Skywalker's fall from grace. And yet, if you think about it, Revenge of the Sith left some wiggle room for a previously unrevealed rematch. Obi-Wan left Anakin for dead, and didn't stick around to see his former friend and student get transformed into a Dark Lord of the Sith. In the latest trailer for Obi-Wan Kenobi, we see Vader's artificial body as it is assembled for a showdown with Obi-Wan himself. And while Vader is largely off-screen here, his presence is felt throughout.

In the latest trailer, the Empire also ratchets up the pressure on Obi-Wan. But it takes the Third Sister, Reva, to realize that the Inquisitors alone aren't enough to draw Obi-Wan out of hiding. That's why she makes him a very public fugitive and sets a high bounty for his capture. Reva also warns Obi-Wan that he can't escape Darth Vader forever.
