John Wick (2014)

John Wick walks with his gun
Summit Entertainment

When one of the best action movies of the last 10 years is streaming for free, you’re doing yourself a disservice by not watching it. We’re referring to John Wick, the action film starring Keanu Reeves as the titular hitman. John Wick (Reeves) left the criminal underworld to live a peaceful life with his wife, Helen (Bridget Moynahan). When Helen tragically dies, she sends John a puppy to help him grieve. One night, the son of a Russian crime boss (Alfie Allen) breaks into John’s home, steals his car, and kills the puppy.

To say that was a huge mistake would be an understatement. Hell-bent on revenge, John puts on his snazzy black suit, grabs a gun, and sets off on a path of vengeance. Directed by Chad Stahelski, John Wick reinvigorated Reeves’ career, returning the talented actor to A-list status. Because of its dazzling stunt work, the John Wick franchise has become the gold standard for action sequences.

Hacksaw Ridge (2016)

A soldier runs through a battlefield.
Lionsgate

Hacksaw Ridge is a story so unfathomable that you have to believe it. No one could conjure up a story this inspiring from their imagination. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Desmond T. Doss (Andrew Garfield) joins the United States Army as a combat medic. Desmond is a conscientious objector, meaning he refuses to pick up a gun. In basic training, Desmond is shunned by his fellow soldiers.

However, Desmond never caves, earning the respect of his group over time. It all comes to a head during the Battle of Okinawa. With the Americans pinned down, Desmond puts his life on the line to save others. This selflessness is at the heart of Hacksaw Ridge, a gripping war thriller about one man’s faith and heroism.

Geostorm (2017)

A group of scared people run for their lives.
Warner Bros.

Disaster movies are great forms of escapism. There’s something about watching a group of people save the world that makes for a good blockbuster. Geostorm, the 2017 film by Dean Devlin, was initially destroyed by critics. Upon further examination, Geostorm isn’t that bad, and that’s a credit to one man: Gerard Butler, whose commitment to making 1990s-style action movies should be applauded.

To combat climate change, a team of scientists led by Jake Lawson (Butler) created “Dutch Boy,” an intricate series of climate-controlling satellites that can manipulate the weather to prevent natural disasters. A few years later, Dutch Boy begins to malfunction. After an initial investigation, Jake learns a group of terrorists planted a virus in Dutch Boy to create a geostorm that could wipe out most of mankind. While Jake tries to stop the virus in space, his brothe,r Max (Jim Sturgess), searches for the person behind the virus. Time is ticking, and the world’s fate rests in the brothers’ hands.

3 underrated (HBO) Max movies you should watch this weekend (December 6-8)
A group of men sit at a table in Conspiracy.

Have you defied gravity yet? If not, you're one of the few who haven't. Wicked is a genuine phenomenon right now, and one of the leading contenders for next year's Oscars. But I haven't taken a trip to Oz yet simply because there's too much good stuff on streaming right now.

That's especially true for Max, which has great films from the present to the distant past. (Yes, they even have 1939's The Wizard of Oz.) If you have a craving for movies that don't contain evil witches, pink-colored princesses, or flying monkeys, well, this list is for you. These movies may have Nazis, porn stars, and real-life artists, but they are all united by their ability to entertain and even enlighten.

As we head into the first full weekend of December, Hulu remains the go-to destination for movie lovers. Netflix may have a bigger library, but Hulu has a stronger lineup overall, having recently added a fresh batch of films for the month. And now it's time to share our picks for the three great Hulu movies that you need to stream this weekend.

Our first choice is one of the rare action films to win an Oscar for Best Picture, followed by a classic romantic drama, and a comedy reboot that brought some much-needed heart back to a franchise.

3 underrated Netflix movies you should watch this weekend (December 6-8)
A man aims a gun in Cold Pursuit.

It's cold out there, so why go out? And honestly, is it worth it to see Wicked again? Once you see a green witch fly off into the horizon, there's nothing left to revisit. What you see is what you get. But if you stay home and check out what's on streaming, I guarantee you can find some hidden treasures you may have missed.

Netflix has tons of those, and I've selected three of them that are perfect to watch over the second weekend of December. One's a revenge flick set in the dead of winter, while another is a holiday movie that won't make you puke. The last one is a decent sci-fi movie with a rare Harrison Ford supporting performance. All three films will entertain you far more than singing along to Defying Gravity again. Trust me.
