As an Android user, here’s what I want to see from Apple’s ‘California Streaming’ event

Add as a preferred source on Google

With Apple’s “California Streaming” event livestreaming tomorrow, we already have a good idea of everything that’s going to be announced. From the iPhone 13 to the AirPods 3 to the Apple Watch Series 7,  there’s something to appeal to every Apple user in the market for an upgrade. But I’m not an Apple user and I never really have been. So that brings up the age-old question: What would make me switch?

Guess no further, because here’s my wish list:

A lot more juice for the iPhone 13

When it comes to the iPhone 13, one of the biggest things on my checklist is better battery life. As an avid mobile gamer on my Galaxy S21, it was disappointing to me that previous models of the iPhone only lasted a handful of hours after checking my social media, answering emails, and taking phone calls. Some of the leaks of the iPhone 13 have shown a thicker phone to accommodate for a larger battery.  My hope is that Apple took consumer needs (read: mine) to heart and made it so that the iPhone 13 will last significantly longer than before. Add some MagSafe battery packs to the mix and maybe I’ll finally be looking at an all-day device.

This may shock some people, but I’m also really hoping to see Apple ditch all ports and replace it with wireless charging. I know this will be an unpopular opinion based on the reactions to the removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack, which many users still mourn, but for me it makes a lot of sense. As someone who has spent multiple hours trying to untangle charging cables and earphone cords, this would be a wholly welcome change in my tech world. Let the wailing commence.

The last spec I’m really excited to see is the larger storage capacity. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has corroborated that the iPhone 13 will provide up to 1TB of storage, so you’ll almost never have to worry about photo or Apple Music storage space in the future. More storage is always a boon for power users, gamers, and photographers, though no doubt 1TB will cost a pretty penny.

Give me more power with the Apple Watch Series 7

The Apple Watch hasn’t fundamentally changed in six generations when it comes to its design, so it’s long overdue for an overhaul. I doubt Apple will make the shift to a circular display — certainly none of the leaks have indicated that — but I would love to see a smoother, more modern appearance.

Also, once again, let’s talk about that battery life. While the current Series 6 battery life lasts about two days, it doesn’t always make it there when it’s under heavy use. I’m of the opinion that any smartwatch can benefit from expanded battery life. After all, if you’re taking it off every night before bed to charge, you’re not able to take advantage of things like sleep tracking, which is a significant loss from the overall experience.

Stop killing my ears with the AirPods 3

The big change to sell me on the AirPods 3 is improved comfort, specifically by decreasing stem length. Personally, I find that after a certain amount of time, the stems start to make my ears ache. AirPods are much less comfortable than the Samsung Galaxy Buds Live I typically use, which notably don’t even enter your ear canal. While I doubt Apple will go that route at this time, if reports are to be believed, we may eventually be heading in the direction where the stem is obsolete.

The current AirPods 2 have wired and wireless charging case options, but both still keep a Lightning port, which is rather unnecessary if you ask me. With a prospective upgrade to a portless iPhone 13, I don’t think it’s unrealistic to have a wholly wireless charging case for the AirPods 3, though again, I expect plenty of complaints.

My last and biggest hope for the AirPods 3 is the implementation of active noise cancellation. While the AirPods Pro have this already and it costs a premium for the privilege, I still feel that active noise cancellation is an essential piece of tech that’s absolutely imperative for competing with other budget-friendly earbuds on the market.

Your Android phone could become a powerful tool for detecting cataracts
Researchers found that ophthalmologists reviewing smartphone eye images remotely closely matched in-person referral decisions, opening the door to easier screening in underserved communities.
Electronics, Mobile Phone, Phone

Getting your eyes checked is fairly straightforward when an ophthalmologist is nearby. For millions of people living in rural communities, however, simply reaching one can be the biggest obstacle. Researchers in India think a smartphone could help close that gap. A new study found that eye specialists examining smartphone images remotely made cataract referral decisions that closely matched those of doctors examining the same patients in person.

The setup is surprisingly simple. Researchers developed a portable attachment that clips onto an Android phone and uses a magnifying lens and two small LEDs to capture consistent images of the front of a patient's eye. A silicone eyepiece blocks outside light and keeps the camera at the correct distance. Better still, the entire setup, including the phone, costs less than £150 (around $200). It also works with a telemedicine app designed for places with limited internet connectivity.

The iPhone Duo feels like a Galaxy Fold 8 redux, with a few clever party tricks
Apple waited years to make a foldable, and it looks all too familiar
iPhone Duo camera

Samsung went through the entire journey with foldable smartphones. It started with bulky hinges, terrible cover displays, and heavy bodies. After a few generations, the Galaxy Z Folds became better with each passing year. Xiaomi, Honor, Motorola, Oppo, Huawei, and others pushed the category thinner and lighter along the way.

So when Apple finally unveiled the iPhone Duo, I expected its first foldable to look distinctly Apple. The company has come up with some intuitive uses in iOS 27, and it also has several little software ideas I haven't seen implemented quite the same way elsewhere.

Samsung may give the Galaxy S27 Pro and Ultra brighter, longer-lasting OLED displays
The phones are said to use the M16 OLED materials already onboard the new iPhones.

For the past few generations, Samsung’s flagship Ultra phone has felt increasingly predictable. The only upgrade that really grabbed my attention on the Galaxy S26 Ultra earlier this year was its Privacy Display. The Galaxy S27 generation looks different, though, as Samsung appears to be putting some genuine effort into improving its flagship phones.

We have already seen a redesign in leaked renders, heard rumors of a larger battery, and read reports of changes to the zoom camera. Now, according to ETNews, Samsung plans to equip both the Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra with Samsung Display’s latest M16 OLED material set. These would be the first Samsung smartphones to use M16.
