Apple just gave millions of older iPhone owners another year of free satellite safety features

Apple promised two free years of satellite access back in 2022, and four years later, it still hasn't actually started charging anyone for it.

Usually, footnotes are all about burying bad news from a launch event, something that will hit people where it hurts. But Apple did the opposite with its recent launch.

Buried in a footnote in this week’s iPhone 18 Pro release is good news, specifically for old iPhone users: Apple just extended free access to its satellite-based safety features.

This is the third time that Apple has extended free access

“The free trial will be extended for iPhone 14, iPhone 15, and iPhone 16 users” who have activated their device before September 9, 2026.

For those catching up, Apple originally promised just two free years back when the iPhone 14 launched in 2022. Then it extended that deadline in late 2023 to include iPhone 15 owners, and now, for a third time, it’s bringing iPhone 16 under the same umbrella.

The company has never mentioned or introduced the paid tier it left the door open for.

Although it was limited at launch, Apple’s satellite safety suite now spans four tools: Emergency SOS via satellite, location sharing through Find My, Roadside Assistance, and Messages via satellite.

Why won’t Apple just set a price?

The hesitation makes sense, at least to me. Charging for something that can summon rescuers in the backcountry (which often includes saving lives) invites exactly the kind of PR and reputation disaster Apple doesn’t want, not around its new launches at least.

It’s not like other flagship smartphones don’t have that feature, which would have given the company some sort of leverage. However, I still believe that non-emergency features like Messages or location sharing remain fair game for a future subscription.

Buyers of the new iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and iPhone Duo still get their own standard year of free access from setup.
