Huawei’s flagship has a big brother, and a big price tag

Rumors surrounding Chinese electronics manufacturer Huawei’s upcoming flagship smartphone made rounds last month, as the company prepares for the Mate 9’s expected Nov. 3 announcement.

A new leak from Venturebeat reveals the Mate 9 — codenamed “Manhattan” — will have a big brother, aptly codenamed “Long Island,” which will be released as the Mate 9 Pro. The premium device will come with a curved screen to directly compete with Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge pairing,

While Digital Trends reported on Long Island’s existence last month, this is the first sighting of the device’s in-market name and specs details. With a 5.9-inch display, the Mate 9 Pro will feature a HiSilicon Kirin 960 SoC, 4GB of RAM, and internal memory starting at 64GB and going up to 256GB.

While the Mate 9 offers a top of the line 1080p full-HD display, the Mate 9 Pro takes the screen up to another level with 1,440 × 2,560 QHD.

As noted in Venturebeat, this level of resolution (generally considered overkill) “is being utilized to maximize the 9 Pro’s Daydream VR experience. Someone familiar with company plans said that only the Pro will offer the new Android 7.0 Nougat feature.”

As for cameras, both the Mate 9 and Mate 9 Pro will feature the same dual-lens shooters as the Huawei P9 and P9 Plus, but the specs have “allegedly been improved.” Blass later tweeted that both phones’ cameras have 4x optical zoom.

The Mate 9 and Mate 9 Pro are both expected for a Nov. 3 launch at 2 p.m. CET/9 a.m. ET in Munich, Germany, with the company opening up orders a few weeks later. There is no word whether the phones will be available for order in the United States.

The price tag is presumed to be $1,300. While the phone’s maxed-out specs deserve premium pricing, the cost is a drastic spike when compared to the price of other recent flagships. The Google Pixel XL and iPhone 7 Pro are currently selling for $769, and the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge is selling for $792.

We’ve reached a point where a phone folding in half doesn’t feel particularly strange anymore. Huawei, however, is still determined to make foldables weird. The company has introduced the Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design, the second generation of its trifold smartphone. And while the basic idea remains familiar — two hinges, three sections, one enormous folding screen — Huawei has upgraded almost everything around it.

Fold the Mate XT 2 completely, and you get a relatively conventional 6.5-inch smartphone. Open another section when you need some extra room, or unfold the whole thing into a 10.2-inch, 3K display with an almost square 12.8:9 aspect ratio. Perhaps the wildest number is its thickness. Fully opened, the Mate XT 2 measures just 3.5mm. Naturally, stacking three sections of the phone on top of one another makes it considerably thicker, at 12.3mm when completely folded. And Huawei isn't being subtle about the "Ultimate Design" part either. Black, white, and purple finishes are paired with gold detailing, while the camera housing gets a star-diamond pattern. It's very clearly supposed to look as expensive as it is.

Two major Chinese phone makers have unveiled new foldables days before Apple's expected entry into the category, setting up what could be a pivotal week for folding phones.

Apple may be about to make its long-awaited move into foldable phones, but Huawei and Xiaomi clearly have no intention of letting it have the week to itself. Both Chinese smartphone makers unveiled new flagship foldables in China on Monday, just two days before Apple is expected to introduce its first foldable iPhone. The timing is difficult to ignore. Foldables have been around for years, but an Apple entry could bring a fresh wave of attention to the category, and Huawei and Xiaomi want their newest hardware in the conversation before that happens.

Huawei is taking the more unusual route with the Mate XT 2, its second-generation trifold phone. Like its predecessor, it uses two hinges to transform from something resembling a regular smartphone into a much larger tablet-sized device. It is also the first Huawei phone based around the company’s new LogicFolding chip design philosophy. Xiaomi, meanwhile, has taken a different approach with the Xiaomi 18 Fold. Its passport-like folding design is notable because it resembles the form factor Apple is expected to use for its first foldable iPhone.
