What’s happened? Samsung is said to be disappointed with lower than expected sales of its super-slim Galaxy S25 Edge phone, and because of this, it could look to bring back the Plus model on the new Galaxy S26 lineup.
- The Galaxy S25 Edge launched earlier this year, kicking-off the thin phone market, as part of a quartet of flagship Samsung phones alongside S25, S25+ and S25 Ultra.
- Rumors since suggested Samsung could ditch the Plus model for S26 series, and rename standard Galaxy S26 to S26 Pro, for a trio of devices: Pro, Edge and Ultra. Meanwhile, the thin phone form factor was given a boost with the introduction of iPhone Air.
- But according to reports by The Elec (via Jukanlosreve), the debut S25 Edge hasn’t sold particularly well, leading Samsung to potentially rethink the S26 series line-up and re-include a S26 Plus into the line-up.
Why is it important? This is important because it dictates both consumer and tech industry patterns.
- Samsung isn’t the only one betting on slim phones, with Apple already having launch its own (along with Tecno) and we expect more brands to join in next year.
- If consumers havn’t been sold on the S25 Edge though, it calls into question whether slim phones are the future or just a fad.
- This could be a predicament for Apple and its Air, but we’ll have to wait a few more months before we see if that’s been a sales success.
Why should I care? The future form of our phones currently hangs in the balance. Are Samsung’s slow sales a warning signal for the rest of the industry, or do consumers just need to warm up to slender phones? Only time will tell.
- If the Galaxy S26 Pro, Plus and Ultra models happen to outsell the Edge model next year, other brands such may react by not developing thinner models.
- Without the Plus model, buyers will be pushed to Ultra (higher price), or Pro (lower price with smaller features). The Plus is a perfect in-between for users to buy with just the right price and advanced features.
What’s next? The Galaxy S26 series eyes a January or February 2026 release date, and we’ll have to wait until then to see if the Galaxy S26 Plus does exist.
