The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide leaked in case listings, and the design shift is more dramatic than I expected

The Fold 8 Wide's case doesn't just hint at a wider phone. It hints at Samsung rethinking what a foldable is actually supposed to feel like to use.

Samsung’s purported Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide is still months away from its expected debut, but the phone’s case makers apparently couldn’t wait.

Earlier today, trusted tipster Ice Universe (on X) posted pictures of third-party protective cases for the Fold 8 Wide, which are already listed on Alibaba (a Chinese e-commerce platform).

What do the leaked case pictures tell us about the design?

For the uninitiated, case makers only receive a phone’s exact dimensions and design blueprints once the hardware is finalized. This is why early case listings are important, as they showcase the production-ready design.

In this case, we’re looking at not one but four different pictures, giving us a good look at the phone from different angles. For instance, there’s a vertical, pill-shaped cutout at the top-left corner of the back panel, corroborating previous reports about the presence of a dual camera setup.

The opposite half of the rear portion, for the secondary screen, only covers the bezels, which aren’t as thin as a top-tier slab phone in 2026, but more like the inner bezels of the Fold 7. When folded shut, the right edge carries a precise cutout for the power button, which may double as a fingerprint scanner.

What else do we know?

The cover screen seems to have speaker vents at the top and bottom, while the other half has two microphones at the top and a USB-C port at the bottom.

What’s immediately obvious is that the phone is significantly wider than any other book-style foldable Samsung has ever sold, both when folded and unfolded. The inner display is expected to open to a 4:3 aspect ratio, which is closer to a tablet screen than a phone, promising a better content viewing experience.

Previous reports suggest the Fold 8 Wide could run on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset, One UI 9.0 based on Android 17, and include new Galaxy AI features. The phone is expected to go official on July 22, 2026, at Samsung’s second Galaxy Unpacked event of the year, alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Flip 8.

We finally got a peek at Android 17’s Nintendo DS-like gaming trick
Your Android foldable may soon double as a mini gaming handheld

Foldable phones have really matured in recent years, and my time with the Motorola Razr Fold really cemented that idea. Apart from the novelty of having a flexible screen, brands are baking in unique features that really take advantage of the foldable mechanism and laptop-like orientations.

Now, Android 17 might look past just productivity and offer a new way to experience video games. A sneak peek shared on Reddit by Mishaal Rahman shows a new foldable gaming mode. It is a platform feature coming with Android 17. Simply unfold your phone, launch a compatible game, and Android can split the screen into two halves. The top half runs the game itself, while the bottom half turns into a dedicated virtual gamepad. If this reminds you of old handheld gaming devices like the Nintendo DS, you're spot on!

A new app concept is going viral because it turns your iPhone into a dumbphone. The project started as an Apple Music player design posted on Chinese social media. But after it reached over 1.5 million views, people started asking for a real version. After months of coding, the concept is now a free TestFlight beta called UltraPod.

It makes Apple Music look more like a dedicated music player again. To make the experience more immersive, the developer even made a dedicated case for it.
