Smartphone DURABILITY Awards 2024!

Zack Nelson of the popular YouTube channel JerryRigEverything has just announced his least — and most — durable phones of 2024.

Now, as anyone who’s watched his videos will know, Nelson knows a thing or two about phone durability. Over many years, in the name of research, he’s scratched, scraped, burned, and bent a slew of new smartphones to see how they fare. And, usually, the result is not pretty.

Speaking at a table full of phones and tablets wrecked by Nelson over the last 12 months, the tech YouTuber reaches for the triple-folding Huawei Mate XT as his least durable handset of 2024. He chose it because “not only does it have the super-soft center screen, but that center screen is exposed to the outside world when it’s closed. It also sucks up rocks and dust like a hoover, but that screen, which we already know scratches [easily], is like walking around with a raw egg in your pocket.” He acknowledged that the handset’s design is “super cool” but added that it’s most definitely not “super durable.”

In the original video featuring the Mate XT’s bend test, Nelson notes how the phone actually includes sensors that vibrate to notify you if you’re bending any of the three folds in the wrong direction. “This is the first phone to beg for its life during the bend test,” Nelson quipped just before snapping the far left display with a wince-inducing crack.

As for the most durable smartphone of 2024, well, that went to the extraordinarily rugged Armor 24, which Nelson suggested “has enough built-in protection to survive a steamroller.” The Armor 24 is like a brick, and so there was zero possibility of Nelson snapping this thing in two. To find out which two phones he selected as runners-up in the most-durable category, and which handsets won out in the most/least repairable category, check out Nelson’s video at the top of this page.

Apple’s foldable iPhone could greet you like you’re the main character
iPhone Duo launch could bring a personalised first-boot greeting

Apple could add a personal touch to its upcoming iPhone Duo launch, letting buyers see their names on the screen the first time they turn on their new phones. According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, Apple retail stores in the US will have a system to customise the device’s initial greeting, so it displays a message such as “Hello, Mark” instead of the usual generic welcome.

iPhone Duo

We are just days away from the Apple iPhone Duo going on pre-order, but recent reports suggest customers aren't keen to spend extra on smartphones this year. If the $1,999 price tag of the foldable made you wince too, AT&T is offering to take a massive chunk of that price off for its customers.

The carrier says new and existing customers can get up to $1,200 off Apple’s first foldable with an eligible trade-in. Pre-orders begin Friday, October 16, while general availability kicks off on October 23.

iPhone Duo Duo-Man Featured

I've had a lot of fun downloading dumb apps back in the day. They were often unpolished, buggy, and downright useless. Even then, they were charming and often built around a single concept. You don't get that same feeling with new games or apps on newer phones. Things have a higher production quality and are more polished. This is not always true, but the OG comparisons are apps that turned iPhones into virtual lighters, beer glasses, musical instruments, and the like.

Somewhere along the way, that experimental spirit took a back seat. We've got brilliant software today, which makes me miss those early App Store days even more. But surprisingly enough, Apple's new iPhone Duo is bringing some of that creativity back. The phone hasn't even reached stores, and developers are already making me nostalgic for that wonderfully weird era of smartphone apps.
