Motorola’s new Moto G phones might be the year’s best budget surprise

Meet two new budget phones betting big on entertainment.

What’s happened? Motorola has refreshed its most affordable lineup in North America with two new phones: the moto g (2026) and moto g play (2026). Interestingly, both bring premium upgrades for the price. Think 6.7-inch 120Hz displays, two-day battery life, 5G connectivity, and AI-powered cameras, all wrapped in familiar Moto styling. While neither phone is trying to be a flagship killer, they seem tailor-made for people who mostly stream, scroll, take casual photos, and just want something reliable without spending $500+ on a phone. The moto g gets the fancier camera system and faster charging, while the moto g play focuses on essentials at the lowest price.

Here’s a closer look at the two phones:

  • Both phones feature a 6.7-inch LCD with a 120Hz refresh rate, which should make everyday scrolling and watching content feel smoother. Motorola says the panel can reach up to 1,000 nits peak brightness, helping with outdoor visibility.
  • Power comes from a 5,200mAh battery on both devices. The moto g supports faster 30W charging, while the moto g play tops out at 18W, offering practical everyday convenience at this price.
  • The moto g gets a 50MP main camera with a dedicated macro lens for close-ups, plus a 32MP front camera for selfies. The moto g play keeps things simpler with a 32MP rear shooter and an 8MP selfie camera, but both lean on Motorola’s AI features like Night Vision and Portrait mode to improve results.
  • Both phones run on the MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chipset. While not built for heavy gaming, it should handle routine tasks like streaming, messaging, and social apps comfortably. You also get 4GB RAM with RAM Boost, along with microSD storage expansion on both models.
  • Shared extras include stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos, IP52 water resistance, and a 3.5mm headphone jack, making both phones feel practical for daily use.

Why this is important: Budget phones are often reduced to a checklist of specs, but the new moto g and moto g play show how far entry-level phones have come. They bring features that used to be reserved for mid-range devices, like 120Hz screens, big batteries, and capable cameras, to much more accessible prices. That means you no longer have to spend a lot to get a smooth, reliable everyday smartphone. They also mark a shift in Motorola’s approach: prioritizing long battery life, modern connectivity, and functional design over flashy gimmicks — something many buyers increasingly care about.

  • Smoother daily use: The 120Hz display and capable chipset make scrolling, streaming, and messaging feel quicker and more responsive.
  • Social-ready photos: AI camera features help deliver clearer low-light shots and better portraits without needing editing skills.
  • More future-proof connectivity: With 5G arriving on the moto g play for the first time, faster downloads and streaming become more accessible.
  • Built to last: IP52 protection and Gorilla Glass 3 offer welcome durability for long-term ownership.

Why should I care? If you’re shopping for an affordable phone that still feels modern, the new moto g lineup could hit the sweet spot. Both models promise smoother everyday use thanks to 120Hz displays, dependable 5G connectivity, and batteries that can comfortably last a couple of days. You also get AI-assisted cameras to make casual photography easier, plus durability perks like Gorilla Glass and IP52 splash resistance, reassuring for long-term use. In short, these phones aim to make budget buying feel less like settling.

Okay, so what’s next? The moto g play (2026) lands first on November 13, while the moto g (2026) follows on December 11. They’ll be available unlocked and through a wide mix of carriers in the US and Canada. If Moto can keep the prices steady, $169 for the moto g play and $199 for moto g, these could easily become go-to picks for value buyers, especially in a year where prices everywhere have crept upward.

You could soon ask ChatGPT how healthy your week really was
A rumored Apple Health integration would let AI read your activity and sleep data.
Apple iPhone with Apple Watch Using both

What’s happened? Even though Apple might be moving on to Gemini soon, leaks suggest that ChatGPT hasn't given up on Apple, yet. Recent code analysis of the ChatGPT iPhone app revealed a hidden Apple Health icon, which could be a clue that OpenAI may soon let ChatGPT access data from Apple Health. Though the feature isn’t active yet, the hidden “connector” suggests it could roll out as early as 2026. If implemented, this would allow ChatGPT to read metrics like activity, sleep, diet, breathing, and more (with your permission), and tailor responses based on real health data.

As noted by MacRumors, Strings inside the app reference health categories such as activity, sleep, diet, breathing, and hearing, suggesting the range of data that could be shared.

Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold is cool, but I’m more psyched about the future it teases
It's an eye-catching Android experiment, but it's a sign of better things to come in the near future.
Two formats of Galaxy Z TriFold

Samsung has just given us a demo of what the future is going to look like, if you’re willing to pay a fittingly high amount. The new Galaxy Z TriFold takes the concept of foldable phones, adds an extra fold to it, and changes the device into a proper tablet.

It’s surreal to see a device like that come to life. At least on the global stage. Huawei has already done it a couple of times with the dual-folding Mate XT pair, but that device leaves an exposed screen edge, runs a non-Android experience, and remains far away from the Western markets, including the US.
