Samsung has revealed U.S. pricing and availability for its upcoming Galaxy NX Smart, a compact system camera (CSC) that runs on Android (4.2 Jelly Bean). Consumers can pick up the camera in October for $1,600 body-only or $1,700 with an 18-55mm kit lens. Either configuration, it’s going to cost you a pretty penny to be an early adopter of the first interchangeable lens camera (ILC) running Android – not to mention the monthly cellular service fee it’ll cost you to get connected – considering a non-Android ILC can be had for less than $1K. But what you get is a camera that lets you share images instantly, access cloud storage via Dropbox, and play Candy Crush, and then some.

The Galaxy NX runs on a 20.3-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, and features Samsung’s DRIMe IV image processor and a hybrid autofocusing system. The camera is compatible with all of Samsung’s NX-mount lenses, included the 2D/3D lens. Unlike most CSCs, the Galaxy NX uses a DSLR-like body, and it feels like one too.

Besides 3G/4G connectivity, there’s Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0, although there’s no support for near-field communication (NFC) – interesting since Samsung is a proponent of that protocol. The camera will be available directly through Samsung or retailers, although there’s no mention if they will include cell phone carriers like AT&T or Verizon, both of which offered the Android-based Samsung Galaxy point-and-shoot camera. There’s also no word regarding which carrier the camera will support, but we will update you when that information comes in.

Last year, Samsung worked with actor and director Joseph Gordon-Levitt to create a short film with the new NX1 camera, which is capable of capturing movies in 4K. Continuing to showcase the camera’s moviemaking capabilities, the company is putting the NX1 into the hands of other filmmakers. The latest production, premiering today at Social Media Week Los Angeles and on YouTube, is “Yvonne,” starring actress Marissa Jaret Winokur.

The film is about a woman named Yvonne, who’s juggling life as a wife, mother, and homemaker. The quirky story has her starting a new life inside, of all places, her kitchen refrigerator. (Watch the nine-minute film above, we won’t give anything away.) Based on a story by screenwriter Steven Rowley and directed by Andrew Putschoegl, Jaret Winokur (a Tony Award-winning actress) plays Yvonne.

Updated on December 11, 2014: In a City, a short film directed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and shot entirely in 4K Ultra HD with Samsung's new NX1 camera, has just hit the Web (watch above). The film shows the perspectives of seven cities, focusing on the diversity. The community-based film was produced with the help of cinematographers, musicians, and lyricists, with crowd-sourced talent.

“Samsung’s NX1 is an awesome camera and it allowed us to create something really special with “In a City," Gordon-Levitt said in a release. "The project was one of the most popular collaborations we’ve ever had on the site, with the whole hitRECord community excited to get behind it. We set out to make a film that speaks to a common experience, shared by millions of people, but set in some of the world’s most diverse cities. It was important to capture the unique texture and energy of each city. The NX1 allowed us to do that , and make something that we’re all very proud of.”

Samsung’s mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras tended to cater to entry-level consumers and hobbyists, with features that lean toward ease-of-use for general photography rather than gracing the cover of magazines or gallery walls. That direction, however, is about to change with its new NX1. For the first time, Samsung, after building up an extensive collection of lenses, is going after the pro market, as well as serious enthusiasts. The NX1 is chock-full of features that are designed to rival pro DSLR cameras from heavyweights Canon and Nikon.

To demonstrate its intention of capturing a share of this market, Samsung gave an NX1 to Alex Webb, a renowned photographer who’s part of the Magnum Photos consortium. Besides having his art exhibited in galleries and museums, Webb has shot for popular publications and published several books. As a photographer who has been shooting since the 1960s and has experience the camera technologies that have come and gone, shares with us his impressions about the NX1 from a professional photographer’s POV.
