The space-age Vivo Nex is 2018’s most exciting smartphone yet

Remember the Vivo Apex, the crazy concept phone shown at Mobile World Congress this year? Vivo recently announced it would be the basis for a phone we could actually buy, and has now revealed the final device. It’s called the Vivo Nex, and not only is it very close to the Apex we swooned over at MWC, it’s also like nothing else we’ve seen come out this year — and that makes it very exciting.

Vivo has managed to achieve a stunning 91 percent screen-to-body ratio with the Nex, squeezing a massive 6.59-inch screen into the almost bezel-less body. Take a close look at the screen in the pictures and you’ll notice something missing. Well, actually you’ll notice there’s nothing missing, as the Nex doesn’t have a notch like we’re seeing on most phones with slim bezels at the moment.

This is possible through the use of three technologies we saw demonstrated on the Apex concept. The first is the 8-megapixel selfie camera, which “pops up” from the top of the phone — a fun and innovative alternative to placing the lens at the bottom of the phone, like Xiaomi did with the Mi Mix series. The second is turning the screen itself into the speaker, rather than using a notch to house a single speaker. We had a quick demo of this at MWC, and the sound quality was surprisingly good.

In-display fingerprint sensor

Finally, the Vivo Nex has an in-display fingerprint sensor. Vivo says it’s the third-generation of the tech inside the Nex, following on from the X20 and X21 phones. The X20 worked superbly with Synaptics fingerprint sensor, but the multi-finger sensor inside the Vivo Apex wasn’t quite so successful. We’re hoping the Nex is closer to the X20/X21 experience.

Add all these things together, and the Vivo Nex becomes a look at the next generation of smartphone design and technology. It definitely reminds us of how the Xiaomi Mi Mix influenced the industry when it was released in late 2016. Vivo has also embraced artificial intelligence for the Nex, adding A.I. elements to the camera — including scene recognition, filters, and compositional advice — which it had also revealed separately this year. The Nex also has its own A.I. assistant called Jovi, who we expect will be there, forever and a day, always.

This is a flagship phone too. Inside is a Snapdragon 845 processor and 8GB of RAM, plus 256GB of storage space, and a massive 4,000mAh battery. Android 8.1 Oreo is the operating system but with Vivo’s Funtouch OS user interface over the top. The dual-lens camera on the back has a 12-megapixel, f/1.8 aperture lens, and a secondary 5-megapixel f/2/4 aperture lens. Vivo hasn’t announced when the Nex will go on sale or the price, but the company mainly sells its hardware in China, so you’ll have to import a Nex if you want one.

Vivo S12 and S12 Pro promise studio-grade selfies thanks to color-changing LEDs
vivo color changing lights on s12 pro

Vivo is a Chinese smartphone maker that puts camera innovation in the top echelons of its priority list. It gave us the world’s first phone with a pop-up selfie camera in 2018. Then it went overboard and launched a phone packing dual pop-up selfie snappers. Not one to take a rest, Vivo then fitted an optically stabilized 44-megapixel selfie camera on its V21 5G phone. And now, the company has put a pair of color-changing soft LED lights on the front to capture selfies that look studio lit.

Or at least that’s the goal.

Vivo entered the smartwatch market with the Vivo Watch in September 2020. Today, the company released the Vivo Watch 2. The product will likely compete with the Huawei Watch D, which got a China launch just a day later. This is also the first smartwatch from Vivo to gain SMS functionality via an eSIM, or embedded SIM, making it stand out a bit in an otherwise crowded market. The watch's design was revealed ahead of its official launch, so there are no surprises here. It has a 46mm case and two silicone strap options -- black and white. The circular dial has a neat finish, with two tiny buttons on the side. The smartwatch has a 515mAh battery that runs for seven days on just a single charge. The watch is equipped with an OLED display as well. Other common features such as heart rate measurement, GPS tracking, and a step counter are also present.

Vivo also announced a collaboration with three of China's major telecom operators -- China Telecom, China Unicorn, and China Mobile -- to enable SMS functionality via an eSIM. This means that the Vivo Watch 2 can communicate through SMS without having to be paired with a partner device via Bluetooth, internet, or Wi-Fi, which could make it a game-changing smartwatch. The wearable is currently available on Vivo's China website for pre-order, and 91 mobiles has suggested that there will be two variants of the Watch -- a Bluetooth version and an e-SIM variant, though the site seems to only show three color options for one variant currently. The Bluetooth version would be priced at 1,299 yuan ($206), while the eSIM version could land at a price of 1,699 yuan ($270).

Vivo S12 Pro rumored to launch as the V23 Pro in markets outside China

Vivo earlier this year released its Y32 model on its China-based website, and said it would be launching the S12 Pro on December 22. Since the S-series is exclusive to China, the upcoming smartphone is expected to face stiff competition from the Huawei P50 Pocket, which was also released during the holiday period. However, it is important to note that Vivo S-series products are often rebranded under the V-series of smartphones for international consumers.

What that means is that the soon-to-be-launched Vivo V23 Pro is simply a variant of the S12 Pro. The V23 Pro first appeared on the Google Play console, and was set for a January 2022 release. So far, all of the specs of the V23 Pro are very similar to the S12 Pro. A more recent leak was shared via Ishan Agarwal on Twitter.
