While Instagram is walking (running, really) away from Twitter, Pinterest is tightening its integration with the site by supporting Twitter Cards. The update was first noticed by Kelly Lieberman when wishing followers a happy holiday in a tweet.
Twitter has encouraged third-party developers to take advantage of its Cards API to better display media within expanded tweets. Photo and video sharing sites in particular have taken advantage of the Cards to clean up its media in a presentable format. Now with Pinterest on board, Twitter users can view full images of the linked Pinterest images without resorting to opening up a new page altogether.
You can argue that Instagram was able to experience much of its growth thanks to piggybacking on the social networks of Facebook and Twitter, and while it’s now edging away, Pinterest might be trying to use the integration for the same purposes. Pinterest is a very visual social network, but it’s also embraced as a platform for users trying to figure out what to buy – and what better time is there to leverage that than the coming gift-giving holiday?
It’s possible that Pinterest could lose visitors to its site since Twitter users are inclined to view the expanded tweet and move onto other content with in Twitter. But it appears that Pinterest isn’t too worried. In fact, recently the social network even cut off traffic from Amazon due to high volume, although Pinterest chalked that up to malicious activities from third-party users trying to scrape Pinterest. There’s also the fact that if Pinterest’s buying power is what it’s said to be, then users will click through in order to find the original image.
