Threads adds a bunch of new features in first notable update

Threads got off to an amazing start earlier this month when around 100 million people quickly signed up to check out the new Twitter-like app from Meta.

User engagement with Threads may have dipped since then, but the Instagram team that built the app knows that it’ll take time to secure a loyal following.

To have a chance of success, the work will involve rolling out a steady stream of updates to knock Threads into shape and make it more appealing. The first notable update came on Tuesday, introduced by Cameron Roth, a developer on the Threads team.

New features — currently for iOS only — include translations for posts in a foreign language, and a follows tab.

Alas, the new follows tab isn’t like the following tab found on Twitter, which lets you see posts only from the people you follow, in chronological order. Instead, Threads’ follows tab merely shows you a list of people following your account. It also includes filters for quotes and reposts so you can zone in on any activity around your posts.

In addition, there’s now a way to subscribe to users who, for whatever reason, you don’t want to follow, so you’ll receive a notification each time they post.

Roth added that the app should now load up and function more smoothly than before, making for a more enjoyable user experience.

The update is being rolled out to Threads users throughout Wednesday, Roth confirmed, adding that it might be worth restarting the app if the new features aren’t showing by the end of the day.

Features noticeable by their absence include a chronological feed, hashtags for easy searches, and the ability to send direct messages, so hopefully, the Threads team is hard at work on those, too.

Threads picked up a lot of users at the start partly thanks to its close integration with Instagram, which makes it easy to create an account with pretty much an instant community. Recent disruptions at Twitter since Elon Musk’s acquisition of the company in October have also left many frustrated Twitter users looking for an alternative social media platform. It’s too early to say if Threads is it.

Two features from the new Kindle Scribe are coming to the older model
The back of the Amazon Kindle Scribe.

The Kindle Scribe, Amazon's e-reader with handwriting input, was updated this October along with three more Kindle models. Although the 2024 Scribe visually resembles the first-generation model from two years ago, the former offers better annotation features and AI summaries. With a recent update, Amazon is eliminating the gap between the two generations and bringing these features to the older model.

The older Kindle Scribe model recently received an update that added two new features, Good e-Reader reported. The additions include Active Canvas, which allows you to scribble notes anywhere on a book from your Kindle library, just like you would on a physical book. When you do so, your jottings appear in a resizable box, anchored to that part of the text, and stay there even when you resize the font. Previously, notes would appear on the top of a particular page, which could make things confusing if you had multiple comments referring to different sections of the page.

The Galaxy S25 could add a new feature that’s perfect for mobile gaming
A person playing a game on the Samsung Galaxy A35.

The Samsung Galaxy S25 is set to blow fans away with its impressive specs, and the latest leak just lends more credence to those rumors. According to trusted leaker Jukanlosreve, Samsung is working on a "game mode" that will improve performance without generating a tremendous amount of excess heat.

Jukanlosreve speculates the game mode feature will utilize the Qualcomm Adreno Frame Motion Engine 2.0 (AFME 2.0), which is a technology that can double the frame rate in games without increasing its power usage. That means a smoother gaming experience without extra heat or a noticeable impact on battery life. Qualcomm writes that AFME 2.0 "provides realistic detail by generating high-quality scenes, doubling the frame rate while maintaining the same power consumption."

Instagram finally ends the most vexing side of its content feed
A person holding a phone with the Instagram app open on it.

One of the most infuriating things about opening a social media app is landing on a piece of content and then the app suddenly decides to refresh the feed before you are done fully watching it. Instagram is one of those platforms, and so is X.

Well, it seems Instagram has made the course correction and will no longer refresh the feed upon launching the app unless users physically swipe up or down to scroll past it. The change was confirmed by Instagram chief Adam Mosseri in an AMA session.
