30 stunning spacewalk images to celebrate NASA’s 300th outing

On July 21, 2020, NASA’s Chris Cassidy and Bob Behnken will conduct the 300th spacewalk involving American astronauts. It came 55 years after Ed White stepped out of his Gemini 4 capsule while orbiting Earth to become America’s first-ever spacewalker.

To celebrate the latest milestone in NASA’s history, Digital Trends has gathered together 30 of the best shots taken during some of those 300 spacewalks:

Virts and fellow astronaut Barry “Butch” Wilmore completed a 6-hour, 41-minute spacewalk routing more than 300 feet of cable as part of a reconfiguration of the station to enable future U.S. commercial crew vehicles to dock with the space station.

14. Surely the most spectacular spacewalk image ever, this incredible photo shows NASA astronaut Bruce McCandless II approaching his maximum distance from the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1984. The spacewalk saw McCandless become the first astronaut to maneuver about in space untethered, during what was a first “field” tryout of a nitrogen-propelled, hand-controlled backpack device called the Manned Maneuvering Unit.

However, environmental groups and former space officials are now warning that putting them into orbit at the proposed scale could have severe consequences for Earth's atmosphere and the night sky.

New evidence indicating that a massive sodium cloud observed near WASP-49 b is produced by neither the planet nor the star has prompted researchers to ask if its origin could be an exomoon.

We have already discovered more than 6,000 planets outside of our immediate neighborhood. Yet, finding a moon orbiting one of those distant worlds has proved considerably harder. Astronomers may finally have something close to the real deal, but this particular object stretches the word “moon” almost beyond recognition.

Using the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in Chile, researchers detected strong evidence for a moon-like object in the CD-35 2722 system. Further observations are still necessary to confirm the discovery, but it could become the first confidently detected natural satellite outside our solar system. There is still one tiny complication though. This moon is apparently massive.
