Apple reportedly working on a new iPad-like smart home display

Apple recently announced a new HomePod with support for Matter, but it seems the company might have bigger smart home plans for the rest of 2023. According to the latest report from Bloomberg, Apple is allegedly working on an iPad-like device that could directly compete with Amazon’s Echo Show and Google’s Nest Hub Max.

Details on the rumored product are scarce, but it seems the device would feature a touchscreen and function similar to an iPad. Magnets would allow it to be mounted to a wall, and HomeKit would give it access to all your smart home products. It’s unclear at this time if the device would feature a stand, allowing it to sit on your countertops like the Echo Show and Nest Hub. What is clear, however, is that Apple wants to gain a stronger foothold in the smart home market — and this could serve as a great alternative to using the HomePod Mini as a HomeKit hub.

Apple is also fully committed to Matter , the interoperability standard that will allow devices from Apple, Google, Amazon, and more to play nicely across ecosystems. It’s featured heavily in the new HomePod, and Matter is only expected to grow more relevant as the year progresses. And if Apple is truly invested in Matter, and the smart home market as a whole, it makes sense to launch a first-party smart display.

Apple may host another launch on October 27, with new Macs and an OLED iPad mini expected
Apple’s late-October hardware plans may include a touch-screen MacBook Pro, M6 iMac, and refreshed iPad mini.

Apple is reportedly planning to launch a new slate of devices late in October, and this event will focus on Macs, it seems. Earlier today, Apple confirmed that a smart home-focused event is lined up for October 13, which leaves the doors open for another busy event where the company is expected to launch a highly anticipated MacBook Pro overhaul with the touch-sensitive OLED screen, a new iPad, and more computing gear.

“The product launch is scheduled on or around Tuesday, Oct. 27, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The end-of-month announcements will also include versions of the 14-inch MacBook Pro and iMac with M6 chips,” says the report.

I did not expect Amazon to be the company that made me reconsider what an Android tablet should actually be. The company's Fire tablets have been quite the opposite of what you'd expect from an Android experience. Despite running on the Android OS, they ran a fork of Android, which pushed users toward Amazon’s own apps and services, and famously shipped without the Google Play Store.

That's not to say they were entirely terrible. In our review of the Fire Max 11, we praised it for its hardware package and overall value. Though its sparse app selection was also one of the biggest things holding it back. Installing Google Play yourself made the tablet dramatically more useful.
