Ben Affleck has had quite the career resurgence since he started directing in 2007 with the hit Gone Baby Gone. He followed that up with The Town in 2010, which was praised for its tight action scenes and how he was able to give Boston a lived-in feel, this despite the decidedly lam ending.

He’s behind the lens again for his film Argo, based on true events that occurred in 1979. Argo chronicles the life-or-death covert operation to rescue six Americans from Iran. On November 4, 1979, the Iranian revolution reached its boiling point with militants storming the U.S. embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage. During this event, six Americans managed to slip away and find refuge in the home of a Canadian ambassador. The CIA sends in an “exfiltration” specialist, Tony Mendez, who comes up with a risky plan to get the six out of Iran.

There’s already been some controversy around Argo because Affleck is also playing the role of Tony Mendez. Real life Mendez is a hispanic and some have questioned  the “whitewashing” of Mendez by having Affleck portray him.

Argo is set for a Fall 2012 release on October 12.
