Blue Like Jazz is based on the novel of the same name by Donald Miller which was originally published in 2003. The novel was a series of essays and personal reflections by Miller about his understanding of God and the need for an authentic personal response to that understanding. Most of his stories are based around his time spent taking classes at the very liberal Reed College, located in Portland, Oregon.
The film version follows Don (Marshall Allman from True Blood), a pious 19-year-old at a Texas junior college who decides to escape his evangelical upbringing by impulsively moving to the Pacific Northwest. Reed’s surroundings and eccentric student body prove to be far different from his origins, forcing him on a self-discovery journey. Some other faces in the movie include Claire Hole (Pretty Little Liars) and Tania Raymonde (LOST).
Blue Like Jazz is set for an April 13 limited theatrical release.
