Bully is a documentary from Lee Hirsch that follows five kids and their families over the course of a school year. The stories include two families who lost children to suicide and a mother who awaits the fate of her daughter who brought a gun on her school bus and was jailed for the act.
The film also aspires to explore how society deals with bullying from kids to parents and teachers.
The movie has already faced some controversy in that the MPAA rated the film as an “R”. The filmmakers envisioned that this film would be shown in schools as a kind of deterrent and to put a human face on bullying for kids. Unfortunately, with an “R” rating schools can’t/won’t show the film. Currently the Weinsteins and Hirsch are appealing the rating.
Bully will be out on limited theatrical release on March 30.
