Captain Nascimento’s job is take down the gangs that run the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. Favela is the term used for the Brazilian shanty towns that surround Brazil’s most famous city. Nascimento’s methods are violent but he’s very good at his job. Due to his work he gets promoted to a powerful government position. He believes that now he can finally finish his job. Instead, he finds that his clean up efforts have only made it easier for corrupt politicians and cops to get away with their crimes.
The film is directed by Jose Padhila who previously directed Bus 174 and was nominated for an Oscar as the writer of City of God. The Enemy Within is a sequel to Padhila’s 2007 The Elite Squad. You don’t have to have seen the original to enjoy the sequel but it might not hurt to check it out.
