For Greater Glory is based on the real life character of General Gorostieta, and is set during one of Mexico’s civil wars. Gorostieta was a leader of the Cristero Rebellion. The trailer seems to be making him a very a heroic character, though history suggests that he was quite power-hungry and politically ambitious.
The film portrays him as a retired military man, played by Andy Garcia, who finds himself hesitant to join the Cristeros. Part of the reason for the Rebellion is that, during early 1900s, the Mexican government began persecuting the Catholic church and enforcing anti-clerical laws.
Garcia’s Gorostieta becomes energized by the idealism and courage of the Cristero members. He decides to turn the group into a proper military force to take on the Mexican government.
For Greater Glory is set for a limited theatrical release starting on June 1.
