While the first G. I. Joe movie wasn’t well-received by critics, the film made $300 million worldwide, which was enough to convince Paramount to gear up for a sequel. They’ve changed up some of the faces in front of and behind the camera for this one, in the hopes of making it somewhat more critic friendly.
The biggest switch was from directer Stephen Sommers (The Mummy series) to Jon M. Chu (the Step Up movies). There’s been some worry about whether Chu could handle an action movie, but based solely on the trailers, we’re excited to see what he can do in the Joe universe. Yes, the plot sounds convoluted — but the action looks awesome, which is what you really want.
Cobra Commander actually wears his infamous mask in this one. The movie has also added Dwayne Johnson as Bulldozer and Bruce Willis as the original Joe. They’ve built this one to head in the right direction and we’re hopeful that it’ll be a much improved sequel.
G. I. Joe: Retaliation rolls into theaters on June 29.
