Le Havre is a small film from Finnish director Aki Kaurismaki set in France with French actors and in French. There are subtitles in the trailer and the movie. It’s made the film festival rounds and won a few awards.
The plot of the film centers around Marcel Marx, an optimistic shoe-shiner in a coastal French town. His wife falls ill and ends up in the hospital. The story isn’t really about that though. While eating a sandwich after leaving the hospital Marx discovers a young African boy hiding from authorities in his attempt to get to London with other illegal immigrants. Marx decides that he needs to help the boy and tries to hide him from the authorities.
Le Havre will see limited release in the US in LA and NYC on October 21st, 2011.
