Mother’s Day has actually been rolling around since the Spring of 2010. A release was originally planned for April 2010, but it got pulled and the movie floundered for awhile. Since then, it’s made the film festival rounds and premiered overseas to mixed reviews.
The film is a remake of the 1980 Troma classic of the same name. However, much of the plot seems to have been changed. For example, the 80s version follows three women who are captured during a camping trip and tortured by two brothers and their mother. This new one follows three brothers who head for home after a bank robbery gone wrong, hoping that their “Mother” (Rebecca De Mornay) can provide a getaway. Unluckily for them, Mother lost the house to foreclosure and the brothers stumble upon the new owners having a party with friends. The new owners become hostages, and not long after Mother arrives and takes over the whole show. (Yes, it’s ridiculous.)
Darren Lynn Bousman directed the remake, and it was produced by Brett Ratner. Saw fans will recognize Bousman as the writer and director behind Saw II, III and IV.
If you’re interested, Mother’s Day will be out on a limited release starting May 4, or you can wait until May 8 when the DVD comes out.
