Stephenie Meyer has been reaping the rewards of Twilight for the past few years, but you may not have known that she also wrote a moderately popular sci-fi novel titled The Host, which came out in 2008. Of course, if you’ve looked at Meyer’s canon of work you might not be too surprised if you’ve never heard of The Host. Of the eight books listed in her collected works, only two are not related to the world of Twilight.
The Host is about an alien invasion where alien souls are inserted into human bodies and assert control over the minds and bodies of their hosts. In the novel, the alien Wanderer, is put into the body of a young girl, named Melanie, who rebels against the invasion. The novel follows the internal battle between Wanderer and Melanie, as well as their collusion with a rebel human group that has avoided the alien infection.
Andrew Niccol directed the film. He was previously behind the helm on other sci-fi films like In Time, Gattaca and The Truman Show. Saoirse Ronan is set to play the main character of Melanie. You might recognize Ronan from Hanna or Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones.
The Host isn’t set to hit theaters until March 29, 2013.
