The Last of Us – Joel and Ellie truck ambush cinematic

Naughty Dog’s next big title, The Last of Us, was revealed back in December during the Spike Video Game Awards and the developer has been tight-lipped with details about the game. This week they teased a little more with a brief trailer showing Joel and Ellie, the main characters, getting ambushed by non-infected humans.

The developer describes the cinematic thusly, “Joel and Ellie won’t have an easy road ahead of them. Their path across the US will intersect with other survivors, some of whom won’t be friendly. In this scene set to the somber chords of Hank Williams, Sr., Joel and Ellie continue their journey west in a battered pickup truck. As they drive towards the next destination on their route, and hopefully a place to find critical resources, the pair encounters a group of hunters.”

Naughty Dog has taken on platforming and adventure gaming before, but with The Last of Us they appear to be going after the survival horror genre mixed with a few action elements. Joel and Ellie travel across the United States dodging survivors and infected creatures while witnessing nature’s reclamation of cities.

Voice-acting fans might recognize Joel’s voice from the Bioshock Infinite trailers as the actor Troy Baker voices Booker in Bioshock. Ellie, who looks suspiciously like Ellen Page, is played by Ashley Johnson (though Naughty Dog told PlayStation Magazine that they changed her a bit to look more like Johnson). You might recognize Johnson’s voice from recent cartoons such as Ben 10 and Teen Titans

We don’t have a specific release date for The Last of Us beyond 2013 but like previous Naughty Dog titles it will be exclusive to PlayStation 3. However, in in the same interview with PSM, Naughty Dog also said that they would have more to reveal at E3 in June, and more than likely it’ll be some of the first gameplay videos.
