The Master second teaser trailer

It’s been five years since Paul Thomas Anderson’s last film, There Will be Blood. The 2007 movie netted a number of Academy Award nominations and won Daniel Day-Lewis an Oscar for his performance. Anderson’s latest film is another period piece, this one set in the 1950s.

The Master follows a charismatic intellectual, Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman), who starts a faith-based organization and convinces a drifter (Joaquin Phoenix) to be his right-hand man. As Dodd’s organization gains a zealous following, the one-time drifter finds himself questioning the belief system and his mentor.

Amy Adams and Laura Dern costar in the film. It’s drawn some early controversy for that fact that it’s said to be a thinly veiled allegory for Scientology.

Interestingly, The Master will be the fifth film that Hoffman and Anderson have worked together on (the others being Magnolia, Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, and There Will be Blood).

The Master is slated to hit theaters starting on October 12.
