Fashion designer Halson was considered synonymous with 1970s for glamour, style and excess. Filmmaker Whitney Sudler-Smith takes the journey through his life in the documentary Ultrasuede: In Search of Halston.
He was America’s first celebrity designer and his circle of clients included some of the most famous women in the world, including Elizabeth Taylor, Liza Minnelli, Bianca Jagger, Betty Ford and Lauren Bacall. At his height he put his stamp on not only fashion but also style, putting his name and distinctive aesthetic on everything from sunglasses and shoes to fragances. By day he transformed fashion and by night he held court in Studio 54 with lavish parties, drinking and drugs.
At his peak, Halston sold his business for a fortune but wealth couldn’t protect him from his loss of control personally and professionally.
Ultrasuede: In Search of Halston will be out on a limited release on February 3, 2012.
