Square Enix is teaming up with Ankama Studio to make an MMORPG called Wakfu. The game is based in the world of Ankama’s previous flash-based MMO Dofus, which came out in 2004.
The game features for nations: Amakna, Brakma, Banta, and Sufokia. The territories are different with various monsters, peoples and lands. Players can also try and get elected as governor of their nation.
Ankama Studio has set up an interesting system where the players control almost all aspects of the game’s economy, ecosystem and the political system. There are no NPCs in the game, so buying and trading is done by players. Other than the governship one of the more interesting ideas is that players have to replenish the resources of the game. For example, if a monster starts to die off in the world, then players have to find ways to reintroduce that monster back into the wild.
Wakfu is currently in an open beta in North America with no specific full release date. Vaguely, it has been set at for a February release but that’s about it.
