Virtual reality didn’t take off quite as quickly as the early hype led many to believe it would, but in recent years, there have been some great developments in the world of VR. From new-and-improved headsets to a recent number of great VR games (the most exciting of which might be Valve’s upcoming Half-Life: Alyx), this technology has become considerably more accessible, and you thankfully no longer need to shell out a small fortune to get a good VR setup. Ongoing Black Friday gaming deals make this prospect even more enticing.

Just a few years ago, there were only a couple big names in the virtual headset market (Oculus and HTC), but a lot has changed recently. Today, numerous brands including HP, Dell, Samsung, and Lenovo have thrown their own hats into the VR ring, and the cost of these headsets has come down dramatically as competition has increased and the hardware has become more polished. This has also prompted the big players like Oculus to release some more budget-friendly alternatives, and Sony even made its own excellent (and affordable) VR headset just for the PlayStation 4.

2023 was the year the world at large was introduced to the term spatial computing. Even though Apple didn't invent the term, its use of it while announcing the Vision Pro instead of "mixed-reality" or "augmented reality" was notable.

In short, a spatial computer is a new type of device with a wearable display, the ability to sense the surrounding area, and a user interface based on the wearer's hands, eyes, and voice instead of a traditional screen. But Apple is hardly alone in its pursuit. 2023 saw some huge releases from major players in the game, pushing this technology to places it's never been before, but it will only get bigger in 2024.

As we approach the end of 2023, let's review several devices that almost qualify as spatial computers but fall short of replacing your laptop or revolutionizing computing. AR and VR headsets that include hand-tracking and some form of computer vision are intriguing but ultimately aren't practical enough for most people. AR glasses and smart glasses are much more inviting due to their relatively small and light form but lack complete spatial computing features.

Apple is about to begin mass shipments of Vision Pro, report says

Apple will begin mass shipments of its Vision Pro mixed-reality headset "in the first week of January" before launching it in Apple Stores in late January or early February, oft-reliable supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in a note on Monday.

Kuo added that Apple plans to ship “approximately 500,000” Vision Pro devices as it seeks to get its most important product launch in years off to the best possible start.
