Pushing forward an aggressive expansion into eleven new markets around the United States, Amazon will now provide free, same-day delivery for Amazon Prime customers in those locations. Metro areas included in the expansion are Charlotte, Cincinnati, Fresno, Louisville, Milwaukee, Nashville, Raleigh, Richmond, Sacramento, Stockton, and Tucson.

In addition, Amazon is expanding the reach of same-day delivery in Central New Jersey, Dallas-Fort Worth, Los Angeles, and San Diego. With this expansion of the program, Amazon now covers a total of twenty seven metro areas within the United States. It’s a step that levels the playing field with brick & mortar stores in each area, basically removing the roadblock of having to wait more than 24 hours for your order.

Detailing some popular items ordered with same-day delivery recently, Amazon customers on Spring Break placed orders for SunBum SPF, Ray-ban Sunglasses, the Wilson Outdoor Volleyball, and the Kindle Paperwhite. For the Spring cleaning crowd that was working, popular items ordered included painter’s tape, handheld vacuums, and frame hanging strips.

Interestingly, Amazon previously charged Prime customers a $5.99 fee for same-day delivery in those cities. However, this charge was removed last year due to Amazon’s continued investment into fulfillment centers around the country. That being said, customers still have to place an minimum order of $35 and make sure the order is registered with Amazon prior to noon local time. Delivery of that order will take place before 9 p.m. local time, assuming the order is placed by noon.

If you are unsure if Amazon provides same-day delivery to your area, you can enter your zip code on Amazon here to check. When browsing for same-day delivery items, you can use the filters within Amazon’s search function to specifically isolate products that qualify for speedy delivery.

Why you should opt for slow shipping this Prime Day
Amazon worker packaging products.

It's hard to not get sucked into the capitalist vortex on Prime Day. Just look at those deals and try to keep your credit card in your wallet. But if you can't resist the urge to buy something, you should at least consider opting for slower shipping. it might sound silly, since Amazon offers free two-day shipping for Prime members, and foregoing this perk could seem like a waste of your monthly subscription fee. But hear me out -- just because you can get your items delivered in two days doesn't necessarily mean you should. Here are a few good reasons to consider opting for slower delivery:

The first and perhaps most urgent reason is the environmental benefits. Transportation remains America's top source of emissions, clocking in at 27%. Roughly a quarter of that comes from freight trucks like those used by Amazon, and 8% from planes. In the air, Amazon makes about 160 flights a day with its fleet. Once those flights have made their deliveries, Amazon's trucks will often take smaller, less efficient loads in order to meet two-day delivery times. After all, trucks can't wait around for more shipments to come in so they can make more stops.
