YouTube dating: Co-founder says Google’s video platform started life as a hook-up service

Forget viral videos, live gaming, and millionaire Web celebrities — YouTube’s original mission statement was to help you find love.

Yes, we’re not dreaming this up. If it wasn’t for a quick change of mind we’d all be using the service to find our next partner. According to the Google-owned video platform’s co-founder, Steve Chen, YouTube began life as a dating site. Whether or not it would have turned out to be the Tinder for video hookups is up for debate, but Chen is not so sure.

“We always thought there was something with video there, but what would be the actual practical application?” Chen told the audience at the South by Southwest tech, film and music conference in Austin, Texas, reports CNet. “We thought dating would be the obvious choice.”

Chen elaborated upon the original concept for YouTube, stating that it was conceived as a site for single people to make and upload videos introducing themselves and stating what they were looking for. Even the site’s domain name was registered on February 14, Valentine’s Day.

“Just three guys on Valentine’s Day that had nothing to do,” Chen remarked about himself and his fellow co-founders.

After five days, however, not one video had been uploaded to the newly launched site. It was then that Chen, and his colleagues, decided to ditch the matchmaking element altogether. “OK, forget the dating aspect,” said Chen about the change in direction. “Let’s just open it up to any video.”

It was clearly the right choice. YouTube, which was acquired by Google for $1.6 billion in 2006, transformed into a video behemoth that now attracts a billion visitors a month. Most recently, the platform introduced a new, ad-free subscription model called YouTube Red, which also boasts original content courtesy of its homegrown stars, such as PewDiePie and Lilly Singh.

Chen and former YouTube alum Vijay Karunamurthy were at SXSW to promote their new live video startup, Nom. The company has launched a live-streaming app and companion desktop service that lets users upload content and interact with celebrity chefs and restaurants.

YouTube TV now available in 5.1 surround sound on Amazon Fire TV devices

In 2021, Google's YouTube let it be known that it had finally updated its YouTube TV subscription live TV streaming service with 5.1 surround sound, a move that had been eagerly anticipated by its subscribers since, well, forever. But it only covered select smart TV platforms like LG and Samsung. Then, in early June 2022, the service announced that more devices and platforms were joining the 5.1 party, with the addition of Roku, Android TV, and Google TV. But for some reason, Amazon's Fire TV, the most popular streaming platform in the world, didn't make the 5.1 cut. Until now.

As of June 23, 2022, Amazon says that, "Fire TV Stick 4k Max, Fire TV Stick, and Fire TV Stick Lite all now support YouTube TV's 5.1 surround sound feature." Curiously, Amazon has made no mention of its other Fire TV devices, like its own Fire TV Omni 4K TV, the original Fire TV Stick 4K, or the aging Fire TV Cube. Still, it appears that now pretty much everyone who wants YouTube TV in 5.1 surround sound can get it. Oh, well except for Apple TV owners and those who use game consoles to watch live TV streaming. These folks are still stuck in two-channel stereo, at least for the time being.

YouTube TV today announced that it's finally rolled out support for 5.1 surround sound across three major streaming platforms, with a few more still officially waiting for the feature. Roku — the biggest of the streaming systems in the U.S. and No. 2 worldwide — Google TV, and Android TV all now should bear witness to enhanced audio. Provided, that is, that you've got a 5.1 setup in the first place, and that the program you're watching is spitting out its audio in 5.1.

Those devices join the likes of smart TVs from LG, Samsung, and Vizio, as well as older-model Chromecasts, which already had support for 5.1 audio. Still waiting are Amazon Fire TV (the biggest platform in the world and No. 2 in the U.S.), Apple TV, and game consoles.

It was 17 years ago on Sunday that a 25-year-old guy called Jawed Karim uploaded the first video to YouTube, kickstarting a service that went on to become the go-to hub for video streaming and giving anyone with a camera and a good idea the chance to make a living out of their own content.

The first video was, it has to be said, nothing to write home about. The low-res, 19-second clip (below), called Me at the Zoo, features YouTube co-founder Karim at San Diego Zoo, helpfully pointing out that elephants have remarkably long trunks.
