Regarded by many as “the world’s first sports car,” the exquisite Vauxhall Prince Henry Sports Torpedo fetched £516,700 (about $655,000) at Bonhams’ auction house in London over the weekend.

Built in 1914, the stylish motor could hit speeds of 80 mph, mighty fast for its time and a characteristic that helped win it plenty of attention among early-20th-century gearheads.

The car is incredibly rare,” Bonhams’ James Knight told BBC News, adding, “In comparison to what else was out there, this car was absolutely the supercar of its day.”

The Prince Henry was designed by the acclaimed automotive engineer Laurence Pomeroy and was powered along by its 25-horsepower 4-liter engine. The one that went under the hammer on Sunday was bought 100 years ago by T.W. Badgery, a British businessman who worked in the leather industry. According to Bonhams, Badgery ran the car on “castor oil second pressings” that he obtained from his own leather works. When he went to sell the car in 1931, Badgery – or more accurately, his chauffeur – had clocked up a hefty 140,000 miles in the vehicle.

For the last half a century, however, the car had been driven by just one careful owner, Reg Long, whose recent death led to Sunday’s auction. Over the years, Long took his prized possession on far-flung tours across Europe, showing it off at numerous car shows along the way.

And if you’re wondering if it still runs, the answer is yes. It last hit the roads earlier this year for a gentle 30-mile tootle.

Sunday’s auction saw the Prince Henry snapped up by a vintage car enthusiast from the north of England, the sizable payout securing the top bidder a very special piece of automotive history.

Bentley’s first-ever fully electric SUV will be called Torcal
Bentley's biggest challenge isn't building an EV anymore
Bentley Torcal

Bentley has officially named its first-ever fully electric vehicle Torcal, marking one of the biggest milestones in the British marque's 107-year history. The luxury SUV will make its global debut on September 23, becoming Bentley's fourth model line alongside the Continental GT, Flying Spur, and Bentayga.

The announcement comes at a challenging time for premium electric vehicles. Luxury automakers that once rushed into electrification - including Porsche, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and even Ferrari and Lamborghini - have slowed EV plans or doubled down on hybrids as demand has softened in key markets. Bentley itself postponed its goal of becoming an all-electric brand from 2030 to 2035, choosing a more gradual transition.

EV batteries are lasting much longer than the industry expected
The battery replacement apocalypse never really happened
Representative Image

One of the biggest arguments against buying an electric vehicle has long been battery longevity. Critics have questioned whether expensive battery packs would survive beyond a few years or require costly replacements before the rest of the car wore out.

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, real-world data is beginning to tell a very different story. Modern EV batteries are proving significantly more durable than expected, with many vehicles retaining most of their original range even after hundreds of thousands of miles. The findings could reshape consumer confidence as the industry continues pushing electric vehicles into the mainstream.
