Injustice 2, Torchlight III, and more coming to Xbox Game Pass in January

Microsoft has announced the next batch of games coming to its popular Xbox Game Pass service. Seven new titles are coming to the subscription service in January, including Injustice 2 and Torchlight III.

Injustice 2 will be available on console, PC, and Microsoft’s cloud gaming service on January 7. The DC Comics fighting game features a large roster of superheroes, as well as a particularly strong single-player story. In our review of the game, we said “Injustice 2 takes subtle, but mighty steps forward from its predecessor. Everything is faster, more fluid, and refined.”

The other big-ticket item this month is Torchlight III, which comes to consoles and the cloud service on January 14. Released last June, Torchlight 3 is a top-down action RPG with dungeon-crawling elements.

Both console owners and cloud users will get indie game The Little Acre and the eFootball PES 2021 season update on January 7. Anyone with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate has access to the cloud gaming service, which comes to iOS this year, as part of their subscription.

What Remains of Edith Finch, Neoverse, and YIIK: A Postmodern RPG all come to the PC version of Game Pass on January 14. What Remains of Edith Finch, widely considered to be an indie standout of last decade, is the highlight among the trio of games.

Four games are leaving the service on January 15: Tekken 7, FTL: Faster Than Light, My Friend Pedro, and Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet. As always, subscribers can purchase the games for 20% off if they want to keep playing them once they leave Game Pass.

You need to play this underrated zombie shooter before it leaves Xbox Game Pass
A massive Ridden in Back 4 Blood.

All of us have gaming opinions that go against the grain or zeitgeist around certain titles. Oftentimes, it’s because your personal opinion on a title is negative -- I was like that with Sonic Frontiers -- but it can go in a more positive direction. For me, a game I’m a very positive outlier on is Back 4 Blood, a Left 4 Dead successor developed by Turtle Rock Studios and published by WB Games.

Although Back 4 Blood got decent reviews from critics, the public's general response toward the title is more mixed on platforms like Steam. Fewer people are playing it than Left 4 Dead 2 on PC at this point. I've always loved this game, as I enjoy the variance and replay value it introduces, as also think the different playable characters and level design make this one of the most enjoyable co-op shooters of the past several years.

Xbox Game Pass loses some horror greats, but gains a kid-friendly racing game
A custom car built drives around Lego 2K Drive.

We've learned what games will come to Xbox Game Pass over the first half of this April, and leading the batch is Lego 2K Drive, a Lego racing game that's a solid alternative to the Forza Horizon games that are also available on Microsoft's subscription service.

Lego 2K Drive was released in May 2023 and is an enjoyable racing game where players can build their own Lego vehicles and race throughout several open worlds. It found the middle ground between the likes of Mario Kart and Forza Horizon and thrives in that space, even if the microtransactions can be a little aggressive for a game aimed at children. Playground Games has not yet confirmed if another Forza Horizon game is in the works at this time, so Xbox fans can play this game to fill that void until a new one is announced.
