Tekken 7, Guilty Gear, and Auto Chess join PlayStation Tournaments Open Series

Tekken 7, Guilty Gear Strive, and Auto Chess will join Sony’s PlayStation Tournaments program. All three titles will be added to the Summer Win-a-thon, which starts in July and ends in August. Participating players will have a chance to win prizes, including a PlayStation 5.

The PlayStation Tournaments Open Series has been going on since May 2020. The monthly competitions allow players from all over the world to compete against each other for prizes and glory. The Open Series has created a community that celebrates the competitive nature of players.

The Summer Win-a-thon lets players go beyond just bragging rights and lets them compete for actual prizes. Winning games in the list of Summer Win-a-thon titles will put players onto the Open Series leaderboard. The higher the score, the better the prizes. The top 1,000 players will be awarded $10 in PS Store credit, while the first-place finisher will win a PlayStation 5 along with $250 of PS Store credit.

Sony is incentivizing players to try out the Open Series by offering avatars and themes as rewards for those who compete in all four of the Swiss qualifying matches per title.

The Open Series is filled with competitive games that allow players to test their skills against their global peers. Originally, the Open Series consisted of 11 games including such titles as Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, FIFA 21, and Soulcalibur VI. With the start of the Summer Win-a-thon, Tekken 7, Auto Chess, and Guilty Gear Strive will increase the roster to a healthy 14 games for players to compete in.

PlayStation lays off 900 people and shuts down London Studio

Sony is the latest company in the video game industry to announce massive layoffs in 2024. We've learned that Sony Interactive Entertainment is letting go of about 900 people across several studios; PlayStation's London Studio will shut down as a result.

In a blog post, soon-to-depart Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan says these cuts amount to about 8% of PlayStation's workforce. "Through discussions over the past few months about the evolving economic landscape, changes in the way we develop, distribute, and launch products, and ensuring our organization is future ready in this rapidly changing industry, we have concluded that tough decisions have become inevitable," Ryan explains. "The leadership team and I made the incredibly difficult decision to restructure operations, which regrettably includes a reduction in our workforce impacting very talented individuals who have contributed to our success."

I made my own special-edition, Mario-themed PlayStation 5

While we can argue all day about which console is best, there's one PlayStation 5 feature that no other system can claim: customization. On the original PS5, players could easily snap off the system's faceplates and replace them with new ones. Sony would naturally keep that feature for its slimmer PS5 model, creating an entirely new line of console covers, starting with its Deep Earth Collection.

I didn't think much of that initially, considering that it was an expected feature. That is, until I turned my PS5 into my own custom, "special edition" Mario-themed console.

Tekken 8 has only been out for a few days, but folks on the internet have already found a way to make some incredibly convincing recreations of some of their favorite characters from other properties. Perhaps one of the most impressive seen so far is a version of Leon Kennedy that closely resembles his appearance in the recent Resident Evil 4 remake, giving players an opportunity to enter the King of Iron Fist Tournament as a zombie-slaying brawler ... well, sort of.

As shown by YouTube creator Dan Allen Gaming, it's entirely possible to replicate Leon Kennedy's look to quite a shocking level using Tekken 8's detailed character customization features. Everything from his iconic leather bomber jacket to his quintessential '90s haircut is nailed perfectly here by using popular fighter Lars as a base for the customization due to his similarity to Leon in frame and stature.
