UPDATE: It seems that the Best Buy pre-order page for the Motorola Xoom is gone now. Whether this is because the $1,199 price tag was incorrect or the retailer accidentally pulled the trigger a little early — or both — remains to be seen.

The Motorola Xoom tablet, introduced at Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year, competes with Apple’s iPad and then some. Front- and rear-facing cameras (with 720p HD recording), 1GB of memory, USB and HDMI ports, Flash support a 1280×800 display and a fancy, new NVIDIA Tegra 2 CPU. All wrapped up in an Android operating system, the first of the tablet-centered version 3.0. Powerful stuff, and a definite upgrade over the iPad. Prepare to pay for it too. Best Buy’s pre-order page is now live, and the Xoom price is listed at $1,199.

The most expensive of the iPads tops out at $829. It isn’t quite as powerful, though the 64GB of storage space beats out the Xoom’s 32GB. There are no cameras, one-quarter of the Motorola tablet’s RAM and a slightly smaller, lower resolution screen. Plus, you’re locked into Apple’s restrictive iOS unless you’re willing to brave a jailbreak.

The question isn’t just whether the hardware fits the price. It’s also time to start thinking about the possibility that this is a sign of things to come on future tablet releases, including the iPad. Many of the features packed into the Xoom are “dream” features for the next generation of Apple’s tablets. Those bits and pieces will surely come at a cost. There’s always the possibility that the number listed on the Best Buy page is a coding error. Previous reports, coincidentally enough from a purported Best Buy employee, pegged the price at $699-$799. We’ll know for sure soon enough, as the Xoom is in stores on February 24.

Update 1/13/2011 – Best Buy has removed the pre-order page for the Xoom.

Update 1/13/2011 – Thanks to Maxwell Evans for sending us another link to the Xoom pre-order page which is still active.

We're not sure how long stocks will last for these tablets, so if you're interested in taking advantage of either of these offers, you need to hurry with your purchase. If you don't act fast, you may miss out on the savings.
Apple iPad 9th Gen (Wi-Fi, 64GB) -- $250, was $330

The ninth-generation Apple iPad was released in 2021, but it maintains a spot in our list of the best iPads as the best iPad on a budget. It's still a very reliable and solid choice if you want an Apple tablet, with a 10.2-inch Retina display that's bright and beautiful, and smooth performance despite the relatively old A13 Bionic chip that was introduced in the iPhone 11 because it can be upgraded to the latest iPadOS 17. The device also features an 8MP Wide back camera, a 12MP Ultra Wide front camera with Center Stage technology, the Touch ID fingerprint recognition system for security, and battery life of up to 10 hours on a single charge.

The 6 best tablets for watching movies in 2024
Two iPad Pro tablets next to each other against a black background. Both have Apple's Magic Keyboard case.

Tablets are incredibly versatile devices, allowing you to surf the web, check your emails, or play games without the need for a larger (and clunkier) laptop. But one of the most popular ways to use a tablet is as a screen for your favorite movies and TV shows. Since they're slim enough to pack into a backpack and light enough to prop up while laying in bed or on the couch, tablets are a great way to catch up on your favorite shows.

However, not all tablets are great for watching movies and TV shows. Some are built with lackluster displays that can't capture the nuances of important scenes, while others are cheap and unreliable – making them a poor long-term investment. That can make it difficult to shop for the best tablets for watching movies, as there are hundreds of products vying for your attention. But if you know where to look, it's easy to find a premium tablet that'll serve you well for years.

Why you should buy the 2021 Apple iPad
The ninth-generation Apple iPad, which was released in 2021, will be three years old in several months. However, it's still listed in our roundup of the best iPads as the best iPad on a budget, as it still offers great performance by today's standards with Apple's A13 Bionic chip that also powered the iPhone 11 series. The tablet also features a 10.2-inch Retina display with 2160 x 1620 resolution, for sharp details and vivid colors when you're browsing the internet, watching streaming shows, and playing mobile games.
