The Ark trailer showcases the fight for survival in space

When humans travel into space on colonization missions in movies, things typically go wrong. And following that pattern, the first trailer for SYFY’s space adventure The Ark previews a fight for survival.

Set 100 years in the future, the survival of the human race depends on the success of a group of colonization missions to other planets. With one year remaining on their journey, the people aboard Ark One experience a catastrophic event that results in casualties to the crew and damage to the ship. The spacecraft is losing vital resources by the minute, threatening the entire operation. With all the high-ranking officials dead, the rest of the crew must band together to repair the ship and continue their mission. However, not everyone will make it in this battle for survival.

Christie Burke (Maid) headlines the series as Lt. Sharon Garnet. Starring alongside Burke is Reece Ritchie (The Outpost) as Lt. Spencer Lane, Richard Fleeshman (The Sandman) as Lt. James Brice, Ryan Adams (Orange Peel) as Angus Medford, and Stacey Read (Aneni) as Alicia Nevins. Christina Wolfe (Batwoman), Miles Barrow (The Peripheral), Pavle Jerinić (Mayhem), Shalini Peiris (Vera), Tiana Upcheva (My Husband’s Double Life), and Lisa Brenner (Bad Samaritan) are set to appear in recurring roles.

The Ark is created by Dean Devlin, best known for his collaborations with Roland Emmerich on Independence Day and Godzilla, and Jonathan Glassner (Stargate SG-1). Both will serve as showrunners and executive producers.

The Ark premieres on SYFY at 10 p.m. ET on February 1. Episodes will stream the next day on Peacock.

It's a new month, and that means new movies on Hulu. And somebody over there really loves Tom Hanks. Because in this month alone, Hulu is adding Hanks' directorial debut, That Thing You Do, one of his most iconic films, Big, and one of his most recent hits, Elvis. But if we had to choose only one Hulu movie to stream in May 2024, then our pick is another Tom Hanks movie: Cast Away.

Robert Zemeckis directed the film from a script by William Broyles Jr. It cast Hanks as Chuck Noland, a FedEx employee who survives a plane crash in the Pacific ocean, only to find himself stranded on an island in the middle of nowhere without anyone to turn to but himself. Cast Away was actually a big hit in late 2000 and during the early part of 2001, earning $429.6 million worldwide. That may not have translated into Oscar gold for two-time Best Actor winner Hanks, but Cast Away is an unforgettable film that deserves a new audience nearly 24 years after it hit theaters.
