There must be some ‘Independence Day’ fans in Germany – Mercedes to call its top-end S-Class ‘Pullman’

Mercedes-Benz recently discontinued its Maybach brand, causing many hip-hoppers to weep into their jewel-encrusted pimp challises. Weep no more, our bling-drenched friends. Mercedes will have four versions of its new S-Class, including an extra-long wheel base model.

That’s right, the forthcoming S-Class will – as we expected – go after every luxury sedan from the $100,000 mark and up, including the Rolls-Royce Phantom. Which S-Class model has been charged with challenging the reigning king of luxury? None other than the hilariously named S-Class “Pullman.”

“We see a chance to extend our leadership at the top end of the luxury car market. We plan to extend the number of models, and a Pullman is included in those plans,” Daimler chairman Dieter Zetsche said in an Autocar interview.

Aside from the new range-topping Pullman, Mercedes will have three-to-four other S-Class body styles, depending on how you look at it. There will be the standard S-Class, a long wheelbase, an extra-long, a coupe replacing the CL, and a convertible CL.

We’re extremely excited about the S-Class coupe and its convertible variant. The current CL, despite being virtually prehistoric at this point, is one of our favorite cars on the road. Mix in the unbridled power and panache of the CL with the new styling of the 2014 S-Class and you’ve got something very special indeed.

Although the new S-Class will go on sale this fall, the S-Class coupe won’t be unveiled until the Frankfurt auto show this September.

The front three-quarter view of a 2022 Rivian against a rocky backdrop.

Rivian has finally unveiled the R2, its long-awaited attempt at a more affordable electric SUV. The new vehicle may not be available just yet, but fans of Rivian's design aesthetics and feature set are already looking forward to being able to order the new car. The R2 is targeted at being a more affordable take on the electric SUV and will sit alongside the flagship-tier R1S.

Let's get this out of the way right now: The R1S is most likely going to be a better vehicle than the R2. Rivian isn't replacing the R1S with the R2 — it's releasing the R2 as a more affordable alternative, and there will be some compromises when buying the R2 over the R1S.

Don’t let the gimmicks fool you. The Ioniq 5 N is a serious track car
2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N drifting.

We’re finally getting to the fun part of automakers’ methodical quest to replicate their lineups with electric cars.

Performance versions of ordinary cars have been a staple of the auto industry for decades. But while we’ve already seen some variants of EVs boasting more power and more impressive stats — think Tesla Model S Plaid or Lucid Air Sapphire — the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is the first to truly apply that format to an EV.
