Frankfurt 2013: Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Squadra Corse is lean and mean

The Lamborghini Gallardo may be on its way out, but Lambo decided to give it one last hurrah at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show. The Gallardo LP570-4 Squadra Corse is a special edition of an already special car.

The Squadra Corse is based on the Gallardo Super Trofeo, which itself is based on the Superleggera. Lamborghini loves special models.

That means the Squadra Corse has a 5.2-liter V10, developing 570 horsepower, hence the “570” in the car’s name. The “4” stands for all-wheel drive, while the “LP” prefix refers to the engine’s mid-mounted position.

Like many of its other limited edition performance models, Lamborghini put the Squadra Corse on a diet. The result is an ultralight curb weight of just 2,954 pounds.

Some of that weight savings was achieved through heavy use of carbon fiber in the interior; the door panels, seats, and much of the center console are made of it. No performance car would be complete without Alcantara trim, and the Squadra Corse has plenty of that, too.

With its powerful V10 and featherweight body, the Squadra Corse will do 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds, and hit a top speed of 199 mph. Really Lamborghini? You couldn’t make it an even 200 mph?

If you’re wondering about the name, Squadra Corse is Lamborghini’s recently-founded racing department. It manages Lambo’s GT3 cars and the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo championship, a one-make race series pitting amateur “gentleman drivers” against each other in identical Gallardos.

The Gallardo LP570-4 Squadra Corse will be sold in the United States, but Lamborghini is only importing 15 examples. While the Grigio Thalasso grey in the above photos is quite fetching, American buyers’ only choice will be Giallo Midas yellow.

If you can’t get a Squadra Corse, or don’t want a yellow car, just wait. At the rate it’s going, Lambo will probably produce five more special editions before the Gallardo goes out of production.
