NBC Universal Signs with Net TV Firm Aeon

NBC Universal has entered into a licensing agreement with on-demand Internet TV vendor Aeon Digital to make movies and television events available on-demand over the Internet to users of Aeon’s set-top boxes.

The deal will include movies from the Universal library, including films like Ray,The Motorcycle Diaries,Skeleton Key, and The Wedding Date, as well as upcoming titles like The 40-Year Old Virgin and The Constant Gardener. Television and event-based programming will include Jerry Springer Uncensored, the 5th Wheel and Blind Date franchises, family-friendly programming like the Balto series, The Land Before Time, and Kicking & Screaming.

The programming will be available to users of Aeon’s forthcoming DV-220 set top box, which the company says they expect to launch in early 2006 for $299. In addition to DVR capabilities, the DV-220 provides IP-based access to the Aeon Digital network via the user’s broadband Internet connection. The Aeon Digital network is described as providing access to “millions of songs, radio programming and thousands of theatrical films.” All content is encoded in Microsoft’s Windows Media format and DRM technologies;

No pricing has been set for on-demand movies from the Universal film library, but Aeon says titles will be available for a 24-hour period after access has been purchased.

NBC’s Peacock streaming service could be free with ads, like old-school TV

NBCUniversal finally gave its Peacock streaming service a name back in September, and now it appears that the decision to buck the "Plus" naming trend won't be the only unique aspect to it.

Unlike Disney+, Apple TV+, HBO Max, or other new and upcoming streaming services, Peacock could be made available free for everyone in an ad-supported model, according to a CNBC report. This would make Peacock the first free service of its kind among the major networks and streaming providers not tied to a cable subscription.

Do you remember Aereo, a plucky little startup from New York City headed by Barry Diller? Aereo wanted to take local, over-the-air broadcasts from major networks, and redistribute them over the internet for a buck a day, or $80 a year. It was a pretty cool idea, except Aereo and Diller never actually got permission from the broadcasters to do it. That small detail ended up costing the company dearly as it was dragged through the legal system all the way up to the Supreme Court -- which ultimately ruled that Aereo had illegally violated the broadcasters' copyrights. Shortly after this loss, Aereo shut down. Now it seems a similar enterprise called Locast (also an NYC operation) is about to face the same difficulties. Locast is being sued by all four major broadcasters, according to Reuters.

There are a few differences this time around, however. Locast, unlike Aereo, is a nonprofit and does not charge viewers any money to watch its service. It does accept donations through its website. But regardless of its profit motive, it ultimately has the same negative effect on broadcasters' bottom lines. Because companies like ABC and CBS typically charge cable and satellite operators a "carriage fee" for redistributing their programming, they fear that Locast will erode this revenue stream because it doesn't pay the broadcasters any money. Locast claims to cover 31% of the U.S. market or over 34 million homes.
